Four Knights named to D3football.com All-Region Teams

MINNEAPOLIS – Four Carleton College football players were voted to the D3football.com All-Region 6 Team for 2023. Tight end Ntense Obono, defensive end Michael Carey, and safety Henry Detmer were each second-team selections, while linebacker Isaac Simons was a third-team pick.

While this is the first All-Region honor for Obono, Carey, and Detmer, Simons joins Travis Brown as the only players in program history as three-time All-Region picks.

A total of 80 players were recognized as the website selected its first, second, and third-team All-Region performers on offense, defense, and special teams. Carleton is 1 of 11 programs in Region 6 with at least four selections this fall and joins Bethel University and Saint John's University as the only MIAC schools to accumulate that total.

The Knights have now earned 24 All-Region awards since 2006. This marks the second time (also 2008) that Carleton has had at least four individuals honored as All-Region (see chart below).

When the regular season concluded on Nov. 11, Obono led tight ends across all levels of NCAA football—not just Division III—with 83 receptions, 8.3 receptions per game, 784 receiving yards, and 78.4 receiving yards per game. His reception total is the second-highest single-season figure in recorded program history and ranked Obono fifth among all NCAA D-III players at the time. His 8 touchdown receptions not only tied him for the 14th-highest single season total in recorded program history, but they tied him for most among Region 6 tight ends and for fourth among all D-III tight ends.

Obono surpassed 100 receiving yards in three games, and his season yardage total ranked 15th among all players in Region 6. He had four games with double-digit receptions.

Through his first three collegiate seasons, Obono has 149 career receptions (seventh in team history) for 1,377 yards and 20 touchdowns. (sixth in team history). He is the third Carleton tight end to take home All-Region honors, joining Steve Ramey (2008) and Brian Frett (2013).

Carey collected 51 tackles to rank second among MIAC defensive linemen, while leading the Carleton D-line in stops for the third consecutive season. He added 9.0 sacks (7 solo, 4 assisted), which easily led the MIAC while ranking third in the region and 24th across NCAA D-III. Carey finished eighth in Region 6 with 11.5 tackles for loss. He paced defensive linemen and ranked sixth among all players in the region with 3 forced fumbles.

In three seasons, Carey has 144 career tackles with 19.0 sacks. He joins Skyler Kessenich (2022) as the lone Carleton defensive lineman to secure All-Region recognition.

Detmer wrapped up the season with 82 tackles, ranking fourth among Region 6 defensive backs and 16th among all players across the region. His 7.5 tackles for loss ranked 10th among D-III defensive backs this season. He was responsible for three turnovers with a fumble recovery and a pair of interceptions. He led the MIAC with 124 interception return yards, including a school-record tying 99-yard pick-six in the season-opening win over Pomona-Pitzer. Detmer added 1.5 sacks and was the only defensive back in Region 6 with more than 55 tackles and more than 1 sack. Additionally, Detmer was third in MIAC and 39th in D-III after averaging 24.3 yards per kickoff return. He also served as Carleton's primary punt returner this season.

Detmer has 192 tackles over his career with 7 interceptions, including a pair of interception returns for touchdowns. This is the sixth time that a Carleton safety has collected All-Region honors as he joins Drew Ziller (2007 and 2008), Mike Elder (2012), Travis Brown (2019 and 2021).

Simons is 1 of 8 players to be voted All-Region 6 for each of the last three seasons and is the only Carleton linebacker named All-Region by D3football.com. He was previously a third-term pick in 2021 and a second-team selection in 2022. This fall, he paced the MIAC and ranked fourth in the region with 93 tackles as he had six games with double-digit stops. Simons finished second in the conference and eighth in Region 6 with 11.5 tackles for loss.

He added 2.5 sacks and two interceptions, making him the only player from the region and 1 of only 5 players across Division III to hit those plateaus while amassing at least 90 tackles during the season. Simons had 294 career tackles, 17th among active D-III players and seventh in recorded team history.

With this quartet helping lead the way, Carleton finished the year with a 7-3 record, marking the first time in the program's 140-year history that the Knights posted back-to-back-to-back seasons of at least seven victories.
