Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Storm surprises Knights, 2-1

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Carleton College men's soccer team out-shot host Simpson College by a 19-8 margin, but the Knights found the back of the net only once in absorbing a 2-1 non-conference loss on Thursday evening.

The Storm (4-0-0) opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a header goal by Ronaldo Ordaz off a free kick.

Owen Flanagan (So./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) accounted for Carleton's (1-2-0) score in the 41st minute. He nearly dribbled between a trio of Simpson defenders, but at the last minute the ball was poked away. Fortunately for Carleton, the ball rolled to Jeremiah Lanzillo (So./Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), who passed the ball immediately back to a now unguarded Flanagan. The sophomore drove the ball inside the far post for his second goal of the season.

Carleton's best chance to take the lead came in the 72nd minute. Ben Pennell (Fy./San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) collected a ball bouncing through the box and took a shot that Simpson goalkeeper Nate Hersom went to the ground to save and somehow sprang back to his feet in time to direct Sam Isaacman's (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) follow-up header over the crossbar.

The Storm notched the game-winning goal two minutes later when Jack Lammers volleyed home a longball into the box.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton's season-opening four-match, four-state road trip concludes on Tuesday, Sept. 13 as the Knights open MIAC play with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Saint Mary's University.
