WINONA, Minn. - The Carleton College men's soccer team took the tour bus for the fourth consecutive match, this time to face Saint Mary's University. The Knights (2-2-0, 1-0-0 MIAC) took care of the hosting Cardinals (3-1-2, 0-1-0 MIAC), winning 3-0 in the first MIAC match for either side as two Knights notched the first goals of their collegiate careers.
 
The opening half of play was highlighted by one of these such goals. After some nice passing work from Colin Kroll (Jr./Wilton, Conn./Pomfret School) and Blake Jones (So./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) in the 14th minute, Barclay Shove (Jr./Boulder, Colo./Fairview) volleyed in a ball that had been crossed in by Owen Flanagan (So./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University). Carleton enjoyed respective advantages of 6-3 in shots and 4-1 in shots on goal across the first 45 minutes of play.
 
Shove's score would be the lone goal until the 81st minute, when Sam Isaacman (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) was taken out inside the Cardinals' box. Trevor Jones (Sr./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) toed the penalty stripe and slotted another one into the net to make it 2-0. Not five minutes later, Isaacman got his redemption for the penalty by dispossessing a Saint Mary's defender and tapping the ball past the keeper. As it was for Shove, this was the first goal for Isaacman in his Carleton career.
 
In net were more firsts, this time for Daniel Linder (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township). The Carleton keeper turned away five SMU shots on goal en route to both his first collegiate victory and shutout.
 
For the hosts, six different Cardinals had at least one shot, with five of those registering shots on goal. Daniel Sessler picked up six saves in net.
 
Up Next for the Knights
After four road contests to start the season, Carleton returns to the friendly confines of Bell Field for the first time in the 2022 campaign. The Knights' opponent is no easy foe in Gustavus Adolphus College, a team ranked No. 16 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches national ranking. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept, 17.
