Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights beat the heat and Athenas in 3-2 win at C-M-S

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Casey MacVeagh (Jr./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) scored twice and Hadley Twichell (Fy./Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) added another as the Carleton College women's soccer team opened its trip to Southern California with a 3-2 victory at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The start time for the match was moved up to 9:30 a.m. local time due to excessive heat conditions, but the temperature was still 92 degrees at kickoff and climbed to 100 degrees by the final whistle.

MacVeagh gave Carleton (2-0) the lead in the eighth minute. She challenged the goalie on a clearance, and that pressure led to the keeper accidentally kicking the ball off MacVeagh and into the net.

Claremont-M-S (0-3) answered back barely two minutes later. The initial Athenas' shot deflected off the crossbar, and the ball was collected by Ava Schmitt, who passed it over to Kaitlyn Helfrich for a shot into the right side of the goal.

Twichell notched her first collegiate goal in the 17th minute, taking a throw in and immediately unleashing a rocket from nearly 30 yards out. There was enough pace on the attempt that C-M-S goalkeeper Sadie Brown was only able to partially slow it down as the ball made its way into the upper left corner of the net.

Unfortunately for the Knights, the Athenas once again responded quickly. Two minutes later a long ball to the left corner was sent in front, and Helfrich finished inside the box before the defense could intercede.

Carleton keeper Keya Mookencherry (So./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) came well off her line to disrupt a C-M-S counter attack in the 44th minute, and the teams headed to intermission tied 2-2.

The second half saw more up-and-down action, but the only tally of the period was MacVeagh's second goal of the contest. In the 55th minute, Twichell chipped the ball over the back line and
MacVeagh was the first one to the loose ball for a one-touch shot into the left side of the net.

The Knights defense withstood the C-M-S offensive attack that threw more and more players forward as the clocked ticked down.

C-M-S finished with a 15-8 edge in shots and took all five corner kicks in the contest.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will be back in action less than 24 hours later as the Knights visit University of La Verne for a 9:00 a.m. PDT / 11:00 a.m. CDT affair on Monday, Sept. 5.

Note: Carleton improved to 3-1 in four all-time meetings between these programs, each of which has been decided by a lone goal. This was their first get-together since the Knights' 1-0 victory in the third round of the 2008 NCAA Championships,
