LA VERNE, Calif. – The Carleton College women's soccer team wrapped up its California trip and absorbed its first setback of the season on Monday, dropping a 3-1 result at University of La Verne.
 
Carleton (2-1) was playing its second match in less than 24 hours, with both contested under game-time temperatures approaching triple digits.
 
The Knights nearly opened the scoring when Cate Patterson (Sr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) struck the crossbar in the 13th minute.
 
Piper Dean (So./Arlington, Va./Yorktown) gave Carleton a 1-0 lead when she converted a penalty kick in the 42nd minute. It was Dean's first collegiate goal.
 
La Verne (3-0) leveled the match with a penalty kick of its own in the 51st minute. The Leopards then added another goal in the 60th minute as the center official blew the whistle and again pointed to the PK spot. Alyssa Moran converted both attempts for the hosts.
 
Carleton's hole got deeper when La Verne tacked on an insurance goal in the 69th minute.
 
All told, the Leopards finished with a 16-12 edge in shots attempted and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
