Kershaw announces Grey, Knutson as additions to Coaching Staff

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton Head Men's Basketball Coach Ryan Kershaw recently announced two new additions to the Knights coaching staff for the upcoming season with the hiring of Tyler Grey and Steve Knutson.
 Tyler Grey Headshot
Tyler Grey joins the staff as a full-time assistant after spending the previous eight years at the University of St. Thomas in athletic administration. Prior to his time at St. Thomas, Grey spent four seasons as a member of the Gustavus Adolphus men's basketball program, where he helped lead the Gusties to four MIAC playoff appearances, including a trip to the first round of the NCAA Tournament during his senior season.  One of the top three-point shooters in the MIAC during his playing career, Grey finished fourth in the conference in three-point field goal percentage during his senior season (41%) and led the Gusties with a 46/14 assist-to-turnover ratio.

"I am elated to welcome Tyler, his wife Abby and their daughter Elsie to Carleton," Kershaw said. "I have known Tyler for quite some time, dating back to his playing days in the MIAC. He is a bright, talented and hard-working individual who possesses all the characteristics necessary to be an exceptional coach. Tyler will be a tremendous asset to our men's basketball program and athletic department as a whole, and I am delighted to have him join the Carleton basketball family."

In addition to his role at St. Thomas, Grey has also spent time coaching on the AAU basketball scene, as he served as a head coach for the Wear Out the Net Program. Grey will also serve as an assistant sports information director at Carleton.

"I am grateful to Coach Kershaw and Athletic Director Gerald Young for the opportunity to be a part of the Carleton community," said Grey.  "I have always had immense respect for Carleton as both an institution and a basketball program.  My family and I could not be more excited to be Knights.  We can't wait to make a meaningful and lasting impact on our student-athletes."

Grey and his wife Abby, along with their daughter Elsie, live in Lakeville, Minn.
 Steve Knutson Head Shot
Steve Knutson '01 returns to West Gym, this time on the sidelines. A four-year letter winner with the Knights during his time as a Carleton student, Knutson finished his career as one of the top three-point shooters in school history. During his junior season, Knutson finished third in the MIAC in three-point makes (65) while shooting a team-best 39% from behind the arc.  As a senior, Knutson's 2.8 assists per game total was ranked 10th in the conference. Knutson has served as a skills trainer, high school scout and youth basketball coach during the previous five years in both the Northfield and Chanhassen youth basketball associations.

"Steve will be a tremendous addition to our coaching staff. As a former player in the program, he is heavily vested in Carleton basketball and is someone I have established a great amount of trust with. I'm very appreciative of his willingness and desire to join our coaching staff."

"I had the good fortune to play for a former NBA player and three coaches that have all won over 500 games.  These coaches taught me the skills and competitive mindset to be a successful player and being able to pass on this knowledge and approach at my alma mater is a dream come true,"  said Knutson.  "I couldn't be more excited to support Coach Kershaw, the student-athletes and Carleton as a whole."

An economics major, Knutson currently works as an actuary and is a Senior Director for Optum. He and his wife, Kristin, and their two boys, Brady and Austin reside in Northfield.

The Knights will open the 2022-23 season on Nov. 16 with a conference road game against Bethel University. Carleton will then travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. for two games over Thanksgiving, first against Whitworth, then either Colorado College or Carroll (Wis.). Carleton had only one senior on last season's roster, so the team is poised to return more than 86 percent of its scoring, including All-MIAC honorees Jeremy Beckler (Sr./Lino Lakes, Minn./White Bear Lake) and Luke Harris (So./Piedmont, Calif.).
