Knights snap slide but settle for Senior Day split with Augsburg

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team stopped its five-game losing streak with a 9-0 victory (5 inn.) over Augsburg University in the opening contest of Sunday's doubleheader at Ele Hansen Field. The Knights celebrated Senior Day but were unable to complete the sweep, falling 2-1 in game two.

Prior to the start of action, Carleton (17-12, 5-9 MIAC) recognized the seven seniors on the roster during a special pre-game ceremony. The honored players include: Caitlin Chu (Sr./Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph Hill Academy), Madison Collins (Sr./Elmhurst, Ill./York), Trina Eichel (Sr./Alameda, Calif./Alameda), Michaela Jellsey (Sr./Yuba City, Calif./Yuba City), Brooke McKelvey (Sr./West Linn, Ore./West Linn), Logan Robinson (Sr./Alexandria, Va./National Cathedral School), and Alexis Walters (Sr./Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep).

Game 1 Recap
Robinson tossed a 2-hit shutout and received plenty of run support as she notched her eighth win of the season. Collins had a pair of RBI doubles and finished 3-for-3 with three RBI. Laurie Avila (Jr./Sugar Grove, Ill./Oswego) was 2-for-3 while collecting a career-best four RBI.

Leading 1-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning, Carleton sent 10 batters to plate, scoring five times on six hits. The hosts tacked on three more tallies in the fourth inning.

Game 2 Recap
Avila accounted for Carleton's lone tally with her first career home run, a blast over the left field wall to lead off the bottom of the second inning.

Faith Hanshaw (Jr./The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands Christian Acad.) did not receive the same level of offensive support that Robinson did in the opener, but Hanshaw did her best to make that one run stand up. However, Augsburg (11-20, 3-13 MIAC) tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and added a two-out run in the top of the seventh.

Hala Soliman (Jr./Harrisburg, N.C./Lake Norman Charter) doubled to begin the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Knights were unable to push the tying run across.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton hosts Gustavus Adolphus College for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, April 26.
