CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Carleton College men's tennis team dropped its final non-conference match of the season, a 5-4 result at Coe College. Both teams entered the match regionally ranked, with the Knights listed at No. 11 and the Kohawks at No. 16.
"This was another great test against a top regional opponent," said Carleton head coach
Stephan Zweifel. "Both teams rose to the challenge, and hats off to Coe for a gritty win."
The Knights (10-4 overall) fell behind 2-1 after doubles. The pairing of
Yuv Kataria (So./Kolkata, India/Weil Academy & College Prep) and
Aniketh Vipparla (So./Cary, N.C./Green Hope) picked up the Carleton point when they rallied for an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, rookies
Tarm Rojanasoonthon (Fy./Bangkok, Thailand/Chulalongkorn) and
Tate Fuller (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) quickly gave Carleton a 3-2 lead.
Rojanasoonthon, playing No. 1 singles and ranked No. 6 in the region, bested his regionally-ranked opponent Rami Hemaiden by a 6-1, 6-4 tally. Fuller improved to 7-2 on the season with his triumph at No. 4 singles by the same score.
Coe got those points back with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Aswath Viswanathan (Jr./Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) prevailed in three sets at No. 5 singles—6-0, 3-6, 6-3—to level the match at four team points apiece.
The decision came down to No. 6 singles, and the Kohawks clinched the match in another three-set thriller by a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 score.
