NORTHFIELD, Minn. – All 11 players on the Carleton College men's tennis roster put their names into the win column as the Knights won their 2022 on-campus home opener, a 9-0 victory over visiting Hamline University.
Carleton (10-3, 4-0 MIAC) bounced back after a narrow non-conference loss on Saturday to stay unbeaten in conference play this season. Hamline dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-3 in MIAC play.
"Our philosophy is pretty simple," said Carleton head coach
Stephan Zweifel. "If a door is closed, just open it again. That's how doors work."
Unusually breezy conditions at the Pat Lamb Tennis Courts had an effect on play, but Carleton still swept the three doubles matches.
William Walsh (Sr./San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) and
Aswath Viswanathan (Jr./Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) won their fifth straight doubles match, this time prevailing 8-3 atop the lineup.
Bence Kisgeczi (Sr./Budapest, Hungary/Szent István) and
Tate Fuller (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) paired up for the first time and won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, while
Noah Mueller (Jr./Dubai, UAE/German International School Dubai) and
Aniketh Vipparla (So./Cary, N.C./Green Hope) were victorious by an 8-2 margin.
The Knights then captured the six singles matches in straight sets to complete the sweep.
Xander Roti (Sr./Locust Valley, N.Y./Friends Academy) picked up the fifth team point to clinch the team victory with his 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 3 singles.
"Another stellar singles performance from Xander today, made even sweeter by being crowned homecoming king during the first changeover," Zweifel said.
Mueller and
Sho Tanaka (Fy./Torrance, Calif./North), who made his season debut at No. 6 singles, also registered 6-1, 6-0 decisions.
Will Stepanski (Jr./Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park) improved to 6-0 this season with his 6-3, 6-0 victory at the fifth slot, while
Tarm Rojanasoonthon (Fy./Bangkok, Thailand/Chulalongkorn) and
Yuv Kataria (So./Kolkata, India/Weil Academy & College Prep) added wins atop the lineup.
