CLERMONT, Fla. – The Carleton College softball team wrapped up its spring break trip by splitting the final two games. The Knights lost 7-0 to Colby College, but bounced back to blank Middlebury College, 9-0, behind a two-hitter by
Logan Robinson (Sr./Alexandria, Va./National Cathedral School) and two more home runs for
Cassie Cunniff (Jr./Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect).
The Knights went 8-3 in the Sunshine State and now own a 12-3 overall mark, matching the program's best ledger through the first 15 games of a season (also 12-3 in 2000 and 2019).
Colby 7, Carleton 0
The Knights were held to five hits—four singles and a triple by
Bryanna Schaffer (Fy./San Diego, Calif./Mar Vista)—as Carleton was shutout for the first time this season.
Laurie Avila (Jr./Sugar Grove, Ill./Oswego) collected two of the team's hits.
Faith Hanshaw (Jr./The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands Christian Acad.) pitched a season-high 7.0 innings as she gave up three earned runs while striking out six batters.
Carleton 9, Middlebury 0
The Knights' bats that were so quiet in the opener started game two with back-to-back-to-back singles for Schaffer, Cunnif, and
Brooke McKelvey (Sr./West Linn, Ore./West Linn). All three would come around to score, providing Robinson with all the run support she would need.
Cunniff added two-run home runs in the fourth and seventh innings. In between the scratched out two runs on only one hit during the sixth inning.
This was Cunniff's second two-homer game of the week. It marks the ninth time a Knight has gone deep twice in a game over the last 19 seasons and the first time in that stretch that a player did so twice in the same season, let alone within a week. She leads all MIAC players with four home runs this year.
Cunniff finished this game 4-for-5 with five RBI. Schaffer and McKelvey also had multi-hit games.
Robinson registered her fourth complete game of the campaign—and fifth of her career—while securing her first career shutout. She struck out five batters as she yielded only a two-out single in the first inning, a leadoff walk in the second, and a one out double in the third. After that extra-base hit, Robinson retired the last 14 batters of the game.
