Knights swept by Bennies to start MIAC play

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The bats were quiet for the Carleton College softball teams as the Knights dropped both ends of their conference-opening doubleheader at College of Saint Benedict. The Bennies prevailed 10-1 (6 inn.) and 9-1 (5 inn.) on a cool, windy afternoon.

Carleton was limited to four hits on the day, two singles in each game, while St. Ben's collected 24 hits, with a baker's dozen of those going for extra bases.

Game 1 Recap
Carleton (12-5, 0-2 MIAC) scored the game's first run as Bryanna Schaffer (Fy./San Diego, Calif./Mar Vista) walked to lead off the top of the first inning, stole second, and scored on Ella Collins' (Fy./Ashburn, Va./Riverside) single. Unfortunately, the Knights collected only one more hit over the rest of the contest and did not advance a runner past second base.

Saint Benedict (15-2, 3-0 MIAC) tied the game with a run in the second inning then scored six times in the fourth inning. The hosts closed out the game with a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, capped by a walk-off double by Megan Erickson, who went 5-for-7 on the day with four doubles and seven RBI.

Game 2 Recap
Saint Benedict plated multiple runs in the first, second, and third innings to build an 8-0 lead.

Carleton scored its run in the fop of the fifth inning thanks to singles by Michaela Jellsey (Sr./Yuba City, Calif./Yuba City) and Faith Hanshaw (Jr./The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands Christian Acad.) coupled with a sacrifice fly by Helen Moses (So./Denver, Colo./Denver East).

The Bennies notched their second walk-off victory of the day, this time via a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the frame.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will look to bounce back as the Knights head to Saint Mary's University for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
