Knights best Bethel on the road

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team moved up to fifth place in the conference standings after picking up a 2-0 victory at Bethel University on Saturday afternoon. Owen Flanagan (So./San Francisco, CA./San Francisco University) scored both goals for the Knights, the second multi-goal performance of his career.

Flanagan capitalized off of a great header from Jeremiah Lanzillo (So./Glenn Elynn, Ill./Glenbard West) for the opening score in the 15th minute, as Lanzillo connected on a cross that hit off the crossbar, with the rebound falling right to Flanagan for a perfect header. Just seven minutes later, Ben Pennell (Fy./San Francisco, CA./Lick-Wilmerding) showed off his technical prowess by placing a perfectly weighted pass to the feet of Flanagan after dribbling rihgt past his defender, who buried his shot into the lower right corner of the net. With the brace, Flanagan took over the team lead and is currently tied for fifth among MIAC players with five goals.

The Knights (5-4-2, 3-2-0 MIAC) kept the pressure high throughout the rest of the period but were unable to convert any other shots.

Whatever advantage Carleton seemed to have in the first half seemed to dwindle at the start of the second. Possession started to become more equal, and the Bethel (5-7-0, 1-4-0 MIAC) front line challenged Knights goalkeeper Daniel Linder (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) with a myriad of shots.

Pennell nearly tacked on an insurance goal when his attempt in the 72rd minute deflected off the right post, and got a second chance as the rebound was worked back to him, before his follow-up shot was tipped onto the crossbar.

Linder, the reigning MIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week for his heroic feats against St. Olaf last Saturday, was able to keep the clean sheet. He lowered his goals against average to 0.667, fourth-best in the MIAC.
