NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Facing a 2-1 deficit to visiting Hamline University with less than eight minutes remaining, the Carleton College men's soccer team rallied with a pair of late goals to earn a 3-2 victory.
Â
Hamline's (3-10-0, 0-6-0 MIAC) compact defensive structure made possession easier for the Knights (6-4-2, 4-2-0 MIAC), but good chances were hard to come by for the hosts, especially in the first half. With five defenders along the back line and a pair of pacey strikers, the Pipers were seemingly looking solely for counter-attacking chances, and they capitalized on the first one they got. In the 13th minute, one striker found the other as Logan Weller fed Robert Cooper on a through ball behind the Carleton back line, and quickly the score was 1-0 in favor of the visiting side. Carleton out-shot the Pipers 10-3 in the first half, but trailed on the scoreboard at intermission.
Â
With Hamline showing almost no intention of trying for a second goal, the Knights offense poked and prodded until finally breaking through thanks to a 61st minute tally off the boot of
Owen Flanagan (So./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University). It was his team-leading sixth goal of the season, tied for fourth among MIAC players this season.
However, the Pipers regained the lead five minutes later when a misplay by the Carleton defense resulted in an own goal.
Â
Carleton was desperate for answers and found what it was looking for in the 83rd minute. A pass intended for
Blake Jones (So./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) was scooped away by a Hamline defender, but the ball trickled right to
Jonathan Vonderlage (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside), who immediately smashed the ball into the net.
Only two minutes later the comeback was complete, and again it was Vonderlage with the ball at his feet. This time his pass from just outside the box found Jones unmarked at the top of the 18-yard box. With a pair of defenders closing down on him, Jones fired a low shot into the right side of the net for his fifth tally of the season and his third game-winner of the campaign.
Â
Alexei Thomas (Sr./London, United Kingdom/Merchant Taylors School) made a pair of saves and earned his third victory of the year.
Â
Jones and Flanagan have combined for 11 of the Knights' 17 goals across the season and six of seven within the current three-game winning streak. For Vonderlage, his three points marked a career high.
With the three points in the standings, Carleton moved into a tie for fourth place in the MIAC.
