ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Carleton volleyball team fell to Bethel in straight sets at after a hard-fought match on Friday night at Robertson Center. The loss leaves Carleton with an overall record of 4-12 (0-5 MIAC), while Bethel improves to 11-6 (3-1 MIAC).
Bethel opened up the match with four straight points to open up a 4-0 lead in the first set. A kill from
Isabel Macia (Fy./Coral Gables, Fla./Divine Savior Academy) put Carleton on the board, but a 9-1 run would later give the Royals an 18-7 lead. A kill from
Sylvia Dixon (Fy./Vienna, Va./James Madison) was the lone point for the Knights in the run, which resulted in another Carleton timeout. This time, the Knights came out with intensity, and scored three straight points thanks to a kill and a service ace from Dixon, followed by a kill from
Annelise Sokolow (Jr./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) to make it 18-10. The teams traded points for a bit, but Bethel came back to take the set 25-15.
The second set opened up with another Bethel lead, edging out to a 3-2 advantage. The Royals then scored 11 straight points to open up a 14-2 lead and never looked back, as the Knights struggled to get back into it. A kill from
Naiya Karl (Sr./Fargo, N.D./Fargo South) finally ended the Bethel run. Trailing 20-10, Sokolow strung together three consecutive kills to bring the Knights within seven points (20-13), but the Royals powered through and took the set 25-13.
In the third set, Carleton came out looking to regain some momentum, jumping out to a 2-1 lead. Though Bethel scored three straight to take a 4-2 lead, the Knights stayed in it, matching each of Bethel's points until later in the set. Midway through the frame, Carleton scored back-to-back points to take an 11-10 lead. However, the Royals used a 12-1 run to pull away and all but put the set out of reach, opening up a 22-12 lead. The Knights couldn't get their footing back, and Bethel was able to take the set 25-14 to wrap up the match in straight sets.
The Knights were led by
Annelise Sokolow (Jr./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic), with 10 kills, followed by
Sylvia Dixon (Fy./Vienna, Va./James Madison) with five kills.
Isabel Macia (Fy./Coral Gables, Fla./Divine Savior Academy) posted 18 assists to go along with eight digs.
Ella Curtis-Revelle (Fy./Denver, Colo./North) also tallied eight digs.
Up Next for the Knights
The Knights head back on the road to take on Saint Mary's University tomorrow night. They will then return home to play Concordia College at West Gym next Friday, October 14th.
