Knights drop MIAC contest to Saint Mary’s

WINONA, Minn. - The Carleton volleyball team fell to Saint Mary's in straight sets on Saturday night at Saint Mary's Gymnasium.  With the loss, the Knights drop to 4-13 overall and 0-6 in the MIAC, while Saint Mary's improves to 9-10 on the year and 2-3 in league play.

After the Knights jumped out to a 3-2 lead, Saint Mary's responded with an 8-2 run to take a 10-4 lead. A kill from Jancyn Appel (Sr./Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) put an end to the run, but the Cardinals did not give any ground. Leading 21-15 later in the set, Saint Mary's scored the final four points of the frame to take the set 25-15.

The second set opened up with a Carleton lead of 3-0, and continued out to a 5-2 lead.  The Cardinals came back to tie the set up with three straight points and from there, the two teams battled back-and-forth out to a 16-16 tie. The turning point came in the form of a 6-1 run for Saint Mary's to open up a 22-17 lead.  The Knights did all they could to stay in it, but the Cardinals continued to put on pressure, and finished the set with a 25-21 win.

In the third set, the Cardinals jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead.  The Knights came back to score three straight points to tie the score a 4-4. Saint Mary's re-gained the lead, this time a 12-9 advantage, and the Knights again scored three straight to tie the score at 12 apiece, thanks to a skillful tip over the net from Isabel Macia (Fy./Coral Gables, Fla./Divine Savior Academy) followed by back-to-back kills from Appel.  However, the Cardinals grabbed the lead again with a kill, and went on their own 4-0 run to make it 16-12. From there, they hung on to eventually take the set 25-17.

The Knights were led by Kerrigan Candra (So./Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central), who racked up eight kills and seven digs. Annelise Sokolow (Jr./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) followed with seven kills and six digs. Jancyn Appel (Sr./Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) also chipped in five kills and a pair of blocks, while Isabel Macia tallied 18 assists and Kailey Smith (Sr./Racine, Wis./Dunlap) totaled a team-high nine digs.
