ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team saw its three-game win streak snapped with a 3-0 loss at Macalester College on rainy Friday night. It was the Knights' first loss to the Scots since 2017.
Both teams created multiple dangerous chances throughout gameplay. Carleton (6-5-2, 4-3-0 MIAC) outshot its hosts by a 15-8 margin and finished with more shots on goals, but the differentiator was how efficiently Macalester (6-4-3, 5-1-1-MIAC) converted its opportunities.
Senior forward Thomas Dono opened the scoring with Macalester's first shot of the game, with a screamer from 30 yards out off the bottom of the crossbar.
Only five minutes later, forward
Jeremiah Lanzillo (So./Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) split three Macalester defenders to find
Briggs Priem (Fy./Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) running in behind, but Scots goalkeeper Sam Price was able to snag the close-range shot. The play from both sides was equal in the first period, with both sides registering five shots each.
Trailing 1-0 at the start of the second half, Carleton was eager to push for control of the game, and the Knights out-shot the Scots 10-3 after intermission. In the 50th minute, Lanzillo nearly capitalized off of an aerial ball with a bicycle kick, but his shot whistled over the crossbar. Not long after,
Owen Flanagan (So./San Francisco, CA./San Francisco University) tried his luck from 18 yards out, but Price tipped that attempt just over the bar.
An unlucky handball from the Knights' backline led to a Macalester penalty kick in the 61st minute, which Dono converted to complete his brace. Carleton started to rotate their forwards and midfielders heavily in the last half-hour of play to create something, but it was to no avail. A 78th-minute insurance goal by Hans Haenicke secured the win for the Scots.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will travel to Concordia College-Moorhead for a 3:30 p.m. affair on Monday, Oct. 17.
