Knights earn key road win, conquer Cobbers 3-1

MOORHEAD, Minn. - On midterm break Monday, the Carleton College men's soccer team took the trek up to Concordia College-Moorhead for a conference tilt. The Knights took home three vital points in the MIAC standings with a 3-1 triumph, giving them 15 on the season.

The Knights (7-5-2, 5-3-0 MIAC) got on the front foot with a strong wind at their back to open play, peppering the Cobbers (3-10-1, 2-4-1 MIAC) keeper Erick Torres with 10 shots. With the finals seconds of the half ticking down, Carleton was still without a goal but forced a turnover. Jonathan Vonderlage (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) passed quickly to Ben Pennell (Fy./San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) who found Trevor Jones (Sr./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee). Jones fired a rocket from the left wing to beat the horn right before the half expired.

In the second half, the Knights' strong offense play continued. On a counter attack, Briggs Priem (Fy./Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) dribbled out of the defensive half and dished the ball to Owen Flanagan (So./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) near midfield. Flanagan took it the rest of the way home for the eventual game-winner in the 51st minute. Carleton added an insurance goal in the 65th minute as the previous scoring pairing flipped roles, with Flanagan sending a cross in to Priem to tap home for his first collegiate goal.

Yousif Alshihmani attempted to spark a comeback with a tally for Concordia in the 77th minute, but the three-goal cushion was too much for the Cobbers to overcome.

Daniel Linder (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) made four saves and registered his fourth victory in net for the Knights.

Up Next for the Knights
