Knights settle for third straight split

ST. PETER, Minn. – After winning the opener 6-4, the Carleton College softball team dropped game two at Gustavus Adolphus College by a 7-4 tally. This was the Knights' third consecutive split.

GAME 1 RECAP
Maris Daleo (Sr./Rockford, Ill./Stillman Valley) and Madison Collins (Jr./Elmhurst, Ill./York) both went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Brooke McKelvey (Jr./West Linn, Ore./West Linn) added a multi-hit performance. All three had singles during the Knights' two-run top of the first.

In the third inning McKelvey singled, stole second, and scored on Laurie Avila's (So./Sugar Grove, Ill./Oswego) base hit to right field.

Carleton's final three runs came in the sixth inning. Collins got the rally started with her second hit of the game, and later in the inning Daleo plated two runs with a single to center field.

Ally Norton (Fy./Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) limited Gustavus to a run over the first 6.0 innings, but the Gusties mounted a rally in their final turn at bat, plating three runs and getting the tying runs into scoring position before Emma Kartheiser (So./Oronoco, Minn./Century) recorded the final out for her first collegiate save.

GAME 2 RECAP
Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, Cassie Cunniff (So./Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) tripled and Helen Moses (Fy./Denver, Colo./Denver East) walked. A passed ball allowed Cunniff to score, and Kartheiser singled with two out the drive home Moses with the tying run.

Trina Eichel (Jr./Alameda, Calif./Alameda) singled and scored an unearned run in the fifth only to see Gustavus answer in the bottom of the frame.

The Gustiies moved in front with a four-run, two-out rally in the sixth inning against reliever Hala Soliman (So./Harrisburg, N.C./Lake Norman Charter).

McKelvey, Avila, and Collins singled during the top of the seventh as the Knights plated one run and brought the tying run to the plate. The rally fell short, and Carleton settled for the split.

Kartheiser and Avila led the Knights' offense with two hits apiece.
