Game Recap: Baseball |

Knights fall twice to SMU during lightning interrupted twin bill

(Updated to include game two information)

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – A pair of lightning delays interfered with play as the Carleton College baseball team hosted Saint Mary's University. The doubleheader began on Tuesday, April 6 and finished two days later. The Knights dropped the first game, 4-0, a contest that saw a 40-minute lightning delay during the second inning. Play was stopped again in the eighth inning of game two, with the teams completing the contest—a 6-2 Saint Mary's victory—on Thursday, April 8.

GAME 1 RECAP
After struggling a bit with his control the first time through the lineup, Carleton starter Matt Stamets (Sr./Bloomington, Ill./University) looked like a different pitcher following the lightning delay. With the chance to regroup, the senior southpaw retired the first 10 batters he faced after play resumed, five of those via strikeouts. He finished the day permitting four runs on three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts over 5.0 innings.

The Knights had four hits against All-American James Green over the first three innings but was able to muster only one additional safety in four frames against reliever Addison Hochevar.

GAME 2 RECAP
Carleton raced out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of first inning tallies. Jacob Smith (Jr./McKinleyville, Calif./McKinleyville) singled home Travis Brown (Sr./St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) to open the scoring, and Jacob Small (Jr./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) beat the throw home on Luke Mager's (So./Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) shallow sacrifice fly.

The Cardinals got a run back via a wild pitch in the top of the second and tied the game with a sacrifice fly of their own in the fifth. Saint Mary's moved in front thanks to a two-out tally in the sixth and added to its advantage with three more runs in the eighth before lightning in the area forced the teams from the field for the second time on the day.

When play resumed two days later, neither team collected a hit over the remander of the eighth and ninth innings.

Ryan Antrim (Fy./Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) was Carleton's most effective hurler in the game, tossing 2.0 scoreless frames with a pair of strikeouts.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS
Carleton's three-game series against St. Olaf College scheduled for April 10-11 has been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Knights added a pair of non-conference doubleheaders to their schedule for this coming weekend. Carleton will visit Hamline University for a pair of 7-inning games beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, and the Knights will now host Concordia College-Moorhead for a 1 p.m. twin bill on Sunday, April 11.
