NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team traveled across town to face MIAC-leading St. Olaf College. After dropping the opener, 7-1, the Knights gave the No. 22-ranked Oles all they could handle before falling 13-11 in game two.
GAME 1 RECAP
The Knights (2-10, 2-10 MIAC) squared off against All-American Julie Graf, who owns the second-highest strikeouts-per 7 innings ratio in NCAA Division III and was coming off a no-hitter against Bethel last weekend.
Carleton drew first blood, however, as
Cassie Cunniff (So./Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) coaxed a one-out walk, stole second, and eventually scored on an error.
Faith Hanshaw (So./The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands Christian Acad.) opened the game with three scoreless frames before the Oles scratched out two runs in the fourth and added five more in the seventh.
Graf limited Carleton to only one hit in the contest, a
Trina Eichel (Jr./Alameda, Calif./Alameda) single that lead off the top of the fourth inning. Graf finished with 12 strikeouts over 5.1 innings with three walks and a hit batter.
Ally Norton (Fy./Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) made her collegiate debut in relief of Hanshaw and contributed 1.2 scoreless innings.
GAME 2 RECAP
This seesaw battle featured multiple big innings for both sides as Carleton scored double-digit runs for the first time this season.
Brooke McKelvey's (Jr./West Linn, Ore./West Linn) first career home run highlighted a five-run top of the first inning. St. Olaf answered with an eight-run outburst in the bottom of the same stanza, an inning that included two doubles and two triples for the Oles.
The hosts tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the second, including Kaleigh Santmyer's second home run of the day, and were seemingly in control.
But the Knights had different ideas as they plated six runs in the top of the fourth inning, including a two-run double by Eichel and RBI single from McKelvey.
Now leading 12-11, St. Olaf gave the ball back to Graf, and she fanned 7-of the-8 batters she faced to record her second victory of the day. The Oles picked up an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Cunniff collected three hits to lead the Knights, while McKelvey and Eichel also had multi-hit performances.
