NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The youthful pitching staff for the Carleton College softball team struggled against the stacked lineup for the University of St. Thomas, with the visitors securing a sweep by scores of 12-2 (5 inn.) and 10-0 (6 inn.)
St. Thomas (14-4, 7-1 MIAC) has won 15 of the last 16 MIAC regular-season titles and entered the day with a team batting average of .337. The Tommies, who will transition to D-I next season, had nine extra-base hits on the day. On the flip side, Carleton's pitchers had worked a combined total of 12.0 collegiate innings entering the season.
GAME 1 RECAP
Boosted by a seven-run outburst in the second inning, St. Thomas took the opener 12-2 in five innings. Megan Baniecke went 4-for-4 with two doubles and 4 RBI for the visitors.
Carleton used singles by
Brooke McKelvey (Jr./West Linn, Ore./West Linn),
Cassie Cunniff (So./Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect), and
Emma Kartheiser (So./Oronoco, Minn./Century) to plate both of its runs in the bottom of the second frame.
GAME 2 RECAP
Tommie righthander Kierstin Anderson-Glass demonstrated why she was previously an All-American and finalist for national player of the year, as she twirled a two-hit shutout in game two with no walks and 10 strikeouts. If that was not enough, the St. Thomas senior went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run.
Madison Collins (Jr./Elmhurst, Ill./York) and
Michaela Jellsey (Jr./Yuba City, Calif./Yuba City) had the base hits for the Knights.
