NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton College seniors Travis Brown (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) and Ryan McGregor (Ellsworth , Wis./Ellsworth) were both selected to the Academic All-America® Division III Football team in voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Academic All-America program recognizes excellence in both the classroom and competition. The Knights are 1 of only 10 programs in NCAA Division III to have multiple Academic All-Americans this year.
 
Carleton student-athletes have now earned the Academic All-America Award a total of 33 times overall, including 10 first-team selections, 18 second-team picks, and 5 third-teamers (see full list of Carleton honorees below.) This was McGregor's first Academic All-America award, while Brown was also a second-team honoree during the 2020-21 academic year, making him the fifth Carleton student-athlete to garner national recognition twice. Brown joins Ted Marschall '09 (men's swimming), Simone Childs-Walker '12 (women's track & field/cross country), Amelia Campbell '16 (women's track & field), and Matt Wilkinson '21 (men's track & field/cross country) on that short list.
 
The Carleton football program has now collected six total Academic All-America awards as tight end Scott Hanks '93 (1st team in 1992), defensive lineman Jeff Thurk '01 (2nd team in 2000), offensive lineman Will Taylor '11 (2nd team in 2010), and Brown (2nd team in 2020-21) previously received recognition.
 
This is the latest in a series of postseason honors for Brown, who owned a 3.59 GPA as a Statistics major. He earned All-Region awards from D3football.com in 2021 at both safety and special teams returner, bringing his career total to three All-Region accolades. He was also a first-team All-MIAC pick at both positions in 2021 and earned his fourth career Academic All-District nod.
 
Brown finished with 81 tackles, which was third-highest among all MIAC players, and he was first among MIAC defensive backs, fourth in the region, and 17th in Division III with 8.1 tackles per game. He ranked eighth in the region with 11 passes defended, and only two players ahead of him on that list had more than 50 tackles.  Brown had double-digit tackles in four games, including 11 tackles (8 solo and 1 tackle for loss) against No. 5 Saint John's. Brown concluded the season ranked sixth among active D-III players with 308 career tackles, 14th in passes defended (37), and 32nd in tackles per game (7.70).
 
He was also a factor on special teams. Among NCAA Division III players with at least 20 kick returns and at least 15 punt returns during the regular season, Brown owned the top kick return average at 22.0 yards per return and was second per punt return at 11.6 yards with both of those averages pacing the MIAC this fall.
 
Brown was 1 of only 3 players to rank among Division III's top 75 in both punt return average and kick return average, while averaging at least 4.0 combined returns per game. He was 12th in the nation in total kick and punt return yardage (680 yards), but each person ahead of him on that list played for teams that had more kick return opportunities than Carleton, including four squads with at least 20 additional chances. Further showcasing his all-around talents on the gridiron, Brown also handled punting duties in Carleton's two-punter system, averaging 38.1 yards on 34 punts (which left him two kicks shy of ranking seventh in the region and 41st in the nation).
 
Brown is the only active NCAA player (across all divisions) to score a touchdown via interception return, fumble return, punt return, and kick return during his career. This season he checked off both the kickoff return and fumble return from that list, and in the process helped the Knights secure a pair of victories over rival Macalester. He had a 95-yard kick return for a game-changing touchdown in the first game against the Scots and added a 40-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the season finale.
 
He was named the MIAC Athlete of the Week three times this fall, twice on the defensive side of the ball, and once for the special teams player of the week, as well as being named to the D3football.com Team of the Week once.
 
McGregor is an economics major with a 3.66 GPA. He tied for first in the MIAC and 10th in Division III with 1.5 passes defended per game, including his team-best four interceptions, which ranked him third in the conference. He also forced two fumbles and ended up eighth among MIAC players overall with 71 tackles (45 solo).
 
He was 1 of 7 defensive backs from the region to average more than 7.0 tackles per game and accumulate at least 40 solo tackles on the season. Of that group, he had the third-highest ratio of solo tackles.
 
McGregor recorded a MIAC-best 41 solo stops in the eight conference games as he amassed at least seven tackles on six occasions, including seven stops overall (six of them solo) and a pass breakup in the game against No. 5 Saint John's. He achieved double-digit stops in three games, including a 10-solo tackle performance in the season finale win at Macalester to help Carleton claim to its best record (7-3) since 2008.
 
He was the MIAC Defensive Player of the Week and was tabbed to the D3football.com Team of the Week following the Knights' first of two victories over Macalester.
 
This year's Academic All-America list for Division III football includes 51 players, with 26 tabbed to the first team and 25 on the second team. Each of these units was comprised of 1 quarterback, 2 running backs, 2 wide receivers, 1 tight end, 5-6 offensive linemen, 4 defensive linemen, 2-4 linebackers, 4 defensive backs, 1 punter, 1 kicker, and 1 special teams member. The differences in positional allotment is due to ties in the voting.
 
The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference saw three other student-athletes honored as well, as Saint John's offensive lineman Tyler Johnson and defensive lineman Michael Wozniak were First Team selections, while Saint John's running back Henry Trost joined the Carleton defensive duo on the Second Team.
 
To be eligible for the Academic All-District and Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution, and be nominated by the school's sports information director.
