NORTHFIELD, Minn. –
Aiana Whitfield (Jr./Richfield, Minn./Benilde St.-Margaret's) scored a game-high 17 points to lead four Knights in double figures as the Carleton College women's basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 76-52 victory over College of St. Scholastica. The win snapped a three-game slide for the Knights.
"We worked hard for a much-needed team win this afternoon," said Carleton head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "I'm proud of both our effort and our improvement."
Carleton (3-4, 2-3 MIAC) shot only 38 percent overall on the day, but the Knights collected a season-best 17 steals as St. Scholastica (0-8, 0-6 MIAC) committed 29 turnovers allowing Carleton to possess a 28-8 edge in points off turnovers and a 25-2 advantage on the fast break.
The Saints got off to a hot start, making 6-of their first-13 shots overall—including four 3-pointers, the last of which permitted the visitors to grab a 19-16 lead early in the second quarter. Five different Knights scored as Carleton answered immediately with an 11-0 run, and the home team did not trail the rest of the way.
However, the Saints hung tough and were still within 39-33 midway through the third quarter. Whitfield scored six points during a game-changing 9-0 burst which was part of the Knights' longer 26-6 run that spanned 10 minutes and finally put the game out of reach.
Jasmine Choi (So./Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) and
Jill Yanai (Sr./Glendale, Calif./Glendale) had 14 points apiece for Carleton, while
Emma Henry (So./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) contributed 10 points off the bench.
Bella Thomas (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) chipped in six points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Miranda Broberg was the lone St. Scholastica player in double figures, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds.
