DULUTH, Minn. – The Carleton College football team found the end zone in each quarter en route to a 30-14 road win over the College of St. Scholastica. With the Saints joining the MIAC this fall, it was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
"Excellent team win on the road," said Carleton head coach
Tom Journell. "We continue to play great defense, with a solid kicking game giving our offense short fields. Offensively, we have a high red zone efficiency, and we're taking care of the ball. We had many people step up today in some critical situations. I love this team!"
Defensive end
Michael Carey (So./Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) finished with seven tackles, including 3.5 sacks, the third-highest single-game total in team history
(see chart below) to go along with a fumble forced, a fumble recovery, and a pass breakup. His sack total is also the highest in a
MIAC game dating back at least through the start of the 2004 season (information prior to that is not available on NCAA.org) and is the most by a
MIAC player in any game since Hamline's Mitchell
Maday had 4.5 sacks vs.
Macalester in a non-conference contest on Sept. 10, 2016.
Carleton (5-1, 3-1 MIAC) opened the scoring with a 30-yard field goal by
Trent Ramirez (Jr./Denver, Colo./George Washington) early in the first quarter. After St. Scholastica (0-4, 0-4 MIAC) responded with a touchdown drive, the Knights immediately answered back with an 11-play, 70-yard scoring drive of their own capped by
Aiden Chang (Jr./Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) running it in from five yards out.
Neither team could move the ball much over the next nine combined drives, as the defenses forced six points, two turnovers on downs, and a fumble.
The last of those defensive stands came when
Michael Carey (So./Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) stopped St. Scholastica quarterback Byron Bishop on fourth down at the Carleton 28-yard line with 5:18 remaining in the first half. The Knights proceeded to march 72 yards on 16 plays culminating in a touchdown pass from
Jonathan Singleton (Jr./San Martin, Calif./Live Oak) to
Carl Marvin (Sr./Wilmington, Del./The Tatnall School) with only two seconds remaining before intermission. That score allowed Carleton to carry a 17-7 lead into the break.
Early in the third quarter, a 35-yard punt return by
Travis Brown (Sr./St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) set the Knights up inside the red zone. Five plays later, Chang powered in again from five yards out with 11:09 still to play in the period.
After St. Scholastica closed to within 23-14, the Carleton defense came up with a big play to help put the game away. Carey had a strip sack of Bishop and then recovered the fumble at the Saints' 25-yard line. On the very next play from scrimmage, Singleton found
Nathan Strieff (Fy./New Glarus, Wis./New Glarus) down the sideline for a 25-yard touchdown pass
The Carleton defense gave the Saints offense no room to operate over the remainder of the contest, forcing a trio of punts before
Doug Pham (So./Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) came up with an interception with under two minutes remaining to seal the victory.
Chang totaled with 82 yards on 23 carries, and
Servon Hinton (So./Ann Arbor, Mich./Skyline) added 65 yards on 13 rushes.
Singleton finished 24-for-44 for 157 yards and the two touchdowns. He now has 16 touchdown passes this season, tied for the ninth-highest single-season total in recorded team history
(see chart below).
Nine players had catches for Carleton, with Streiff leading the way with seven receptions for 46 yards.
Pham was busy pacing the defense with 12 total tackles (11 solo) and the interception.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton returns home to host Concordia College-Moorhead for Homecoming. Kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 23 is slated for 1:00 p.m.
