Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Bench players step up as Knights cruise to 5-1 win over Grinnell

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Lily Hurtubise (So./Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron), Nora Mertz (Sr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), Cate Patterson (Fy./Racine, Wis./Prairie School), and Bella Bettner (So./DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) all scored as the Carleton College women's soccer team registered a 5-1 victory over Grinnell College.

The five goals were the most by the Knights (2-0-1) since scoring six times against University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Sept. 9, 2017.

"It was a great offensive push for us this afternoon," said Carleton head coach Jocelyn Keller. "We have been focused on combining in the attack and playing selflessly for one another, and today the team genuinely felt that. Grinnell kept at us, and we must continue to work on decision making, understanding our opponent, and the pace of the game.

"Lastly, players off the bench were noteworthy. Three scored, and all were match ready and raised the level of play."

Carleton grabbed the lead via an own goal less than 90 seconds into the match. Following a corner kick by Emma Wasend (Sr./Denver, Colo./George Washington), a Pioneer defender tried the clear the ball but instead directed it into the net, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.

The lead doubled in the 30th minute. Patterson rocketed a shot off the right post, and Hurtubise collected the rebound, freed herself for a shot that ricocheted off a Grinnell defender and across the goal line. This was Hurtubise's first career goal.

Mertz—the lone starter to find her way into the scoring column—stole a goal for the Knights in the 62nd minute. She picked off a pass attempt by Grinnell goalkeeper Elizabeth Hunt and immediately struck a 25-yard shot into the open net. For Mertz, this was her 21st career goal, tying the senior forward with Nicky Bloom '08 for sixth place on the Knights' all-time list.

Patterson hit the post again in the 72nd minute, but this time her long-range attempted glanced off the inside of the left upright and bounced into the net for her first collegiate goal.

Bettner concluded the Carleton scoring in the 88th minute, redirecting a cross by Mackenzie Korpi (Sr./Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook), the lone Knight assist on the afternoon.

The Pioneers finally scored 22 seconds later as Crys Moosman headed home a cross, tucking the shot just under the crossbar.

All told, Carleton finished with a 30-9 edge in shots and a 10-1 advantage on corner kicks.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton hosts University of Wisconsin-Stout for a 1:00 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 14.
