NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's soccer team dominated possession for much of the match and secured a 5-0 victory over visiting University of Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday afternoon. First-year midfielder
Cate Patterson (Racine, Wis./Prairie School) accounted for a pair of long-range goals and takes over the team's scoring lead with three goals this season.
Carleton improved to 3-0-1 on the campaign. The Knights have already scored 12 goals this season—and average of 3.0 goals per game—after tallying only 17 goals in 17 contests a year ago.
"Today's match was exciting," said Carleton head coach
Jocelyn Keller. "Our goal was to put together 90 minutes, have a shutout on Bell Field, and call on everyone to contribute. We were able to accomplish all three.
"Once again, individuals subbing on were locked in, and at times, rose the level of play. We had 20 shots on goal and were able to put goals away today. We look forward to continuing to improve as we head into MIAC play."
This 5-0 scoring outburst comes on the heels of a 5-1 triumph over Grinnell last weekend. This marks the first time since Sept. 9-10, 2000 that Carleton has scored 5 or more goals in back-to-back games. (That year, the Knights posted a 5-1 victory over UW-River Falls followed by an 11-0 rout of Buena Vista University).
Lily Hurtubise (So./Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) accounted for the starters' lone goal of the afternoon. She collected a pass into the box from
Nora Mertz (Sr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and finished to the lower right corner in the 16th minute.
Patterson came off the bench and notched the first of her two goals in the 38th minute, cutting back against the defense before striking a shot inside the far post. She found the back of the net again in the second half, finishing a long-range shot for her third goal of the young season.
Senior defender
Julia Kenney (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) set up the fourth Carleton score when she picked off a UW-Stout pass out of the Blue Devils' defensive zone. Kenney found
Bella Bettner (So./DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) unmarked inside the box for an open shot.
Junior
Myranda Sloo (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) rounded out the scoring in the 80th minute with her first career goal.
Tia Ahmed (Fy./Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) sent in a pass from the right side of the box for a touch and a shot.
Lily Danna (Jr./Los Angeles, Calif./Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies) posted her first career solo shutout and lowered her career goals against average to 0.986.
