Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Knights notch 3-2 win over Bethany Lutheran

MANKATO, Minn. -- Olivia Powell (Sr./Palos Verdes, Calif./Chadwick) and Abby Loe (Jr./Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) paced the Knights with 10 kills apiece as the Carleton College volleyball team prevailed 3-2 (12-25, 25-18, 28-26, 22-25, 15-10) at Bethany Lutheran College.

"I loved our resilience tonight," said Carleton head coach Jacki Smith. "We've been in this situation before with a very different outcome. I thought Bethany Lutheran was incredibly scrappy and challenged our mental toughness by continually putting pressure on us. It was exciting to see how we responded after the first and fourth set losses. Our time in practice on individual and team defense is starting to take root. This was big for us going into the weekend tournament."

After the Vikings (2-2) closed the opening set on a 13-2 run, Carleton (1-4) was able to regroup early in the second set. With the Knights leading 8-7, Powell notched a kill and added blocks on three of the next four points as the visitors opened up a six-point margin at 13-7. Carleton maintained the lead through the remainder of the set, leveling the match.

The third and fourth sets were back and forth affairs as the sides combined for 22 ties and eight lead changes, with each team winning one of the sets and sending the match to full distance.

In the deciding fifth set, the Knights raced out to a 9-1 lead only to see the hosts counter with a 9-2 run of their own that pulled Bethany Lutheran within 11-10. Loe registered a pair of kills as Carleton scored the final four points of the evening and closed out the victory.

Inger Shelton (So./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) collected 30 assists and added 13 digs for the Knights. Tegan Carlson (So./Benton City, Wash./Kona-Benton City) registered a team-best 23 digs, while Powell narrowly missed her career high as she factored in seven total blocks, including four solo stuffs.

Carleton heads to Iowa for the ACM Tournament on Sept. 6-7. The Knights will face host Grinnell College at 6 p.m. Friday followed by an 8 p.m. match against Luther College. Saturday includes a 12 p.m. contest against Cornell College.
