I CHOSE TO COME TO CARLETON BECAUSE…
I wanted to continue to compete in my sport, but I came here to play school first.
WHAT I MOST LIKE ABOUT CARLETON IS…
The people, and my team!
OFF-CAMPUS STUDY PROGRAM(S) PARTICIPATED IN AT CARLETON:
India: Globalization and Local Responses - - I met so many new people that I wouldn't have necessarily interacted with outside of Carleton, and I gained confidence in my ability to navigate unknown situations.
MY OFF-CAMPUS STUDY PROGRAM ENHANCED BY EXPERIENCE AS A CARLETON STUDENT-ATHLETE BECAUSE…
Even though we haven't been able to fully communicate, I have been able to play basketball with people from a few different countries which was really cool
INTERNSHIP/EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNTIES DURING MY TIME AS A CARLETON STUDENT:
NSF REU program, Dakota County Court Systems, Towsley Research Fellowship, and Global Edge - - I externed with the Dakota County Court System during the winter of 2018. I discussed court cases and proceedings with judges and clerks, as well as what it was like to go to law school.
During the summer of 2019, I participated in the PRiME Research Experience for Undergraduates, and performed original research in Number Theory and Elliptic Curves. My findings will be published in a national professional journal. I presented at multiple national conferences, and won an award for best undergraduate presentation.
Through the Towsley Research Endowment, I continued my research from the summer of 2019 over winter break 2019.
I participated in Global Edge during the summer of 2020, and while I was supposed to be in Cape Town, the pandemic caused me to intern remotely with the support of the Career Center for an NGO based in Dublin. Wezesha works to reduce sexual and gender based violence and poverty in Nigeria, Kenya, DR Congo, and South Africa, as well as among the African Diaspora in Ireland.
MY INTERNSHIP/EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ENHANCED MY EXPERIENCE AS A CARLETON STUDENT-ATHLETE BECAUSE…
Researching showed me how much I love learning about math, as well as providing me with another support system of faculty who understood what it was like to be an under-represented minority in math. Alex Barrios (my research mentor through PRiME) has been invaluable to my experience at Carleton, and a constant source of support.
