NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Carleton College men's soccer team rallied to tie Macalester College 1-1 (2OT) and continue its unbeaten start to conference play.
Marco da Cunha (So./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) scored the lone goal for the home team.
Â
The Knights (8-1-1, 2-0-1 MIAC) and the Scots (5-3-4, 3-1-1 MIAC) played a physical and evenly matched game, as Carleton outshot the visitors 13-9, but Macalester had four shots on goal compared to three for the Knights. Both teams also attempted six corner kicks.
Â
The Scots thought that they had opened the scoring in the ninth minute when they headed home a freekick, but the goal was called back due to a player in an offside position interfering with the goalie.
Â
In the 31st minute, Macalester did break the deadlock when Max Starks one-timed a cross into the right side of the goal. That tally forced Carleton to play from behind for the first time all season as the Knights lone loss of the season came in overtime.
Â
Shortly after the second half began, da Cunha evened the score line off a beautiful give and go with
Trevor Jones (Fy./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee). Da Cunha made a run to the box, gave it to Jones who gave it right back as the sophomore cut towards the top of the box, took a touch, and then blasted a shot into the top right corner of the net.
Â
With game clock winding down, the Scots continued to push forward in search for a game-winner, but Carleton goalkeeper
Aaron Forman (Jr./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) made three huge saves after the 80th minute to send the game into extra-time.
Â
Both teams battled over the extra 20 minutes, but neither side was able to break the stalemate.
Â
UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton will have a short turn around as they finish up the non-conference portion of their schedule on Monday, Oct. 7 by traveling to Saint Paul in order to take on the University of Northwestern (MN) at 7:00 p.m.
