DULUTH, Minn. – Apparently even heavy rain cannot douse the offensive attack for the Carleton College men's soccer team.
Brennan Johnson (Jr./Portland, Ore./Grant) scored his fourth game-winning goal in a row as the Knights defeated the College of St. Scholastica, 4-0.
The start of the match was delayed 30 minutes by storms, and once play began, the rain persisted. The Knights (6-1-0, 1-0-0 MIAC) controlled play against the Saints (1-7-0, 1-0-0 UMAC), outshooting their hosts by a 25-4 margin. This output brought their season average "down" to a mere 27.57 shots per game, the highest across all the NCAA divisions by over a shot per game.
The reigning Knights got the scoring started in the 15th minute when
Marco da Cunha (So./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) beat his man along the end line and found Johnson the back post for a header. This was the second consecutive game in which da Cunha assisted Johnson's opening goal.
In the second-half Carleton kept their foot to the gas, notching three more goals. Da Cunha added a goal in the 61st minute of a pass from
David Rubin (Jr./Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills School), flicking a bouncing ball over the goal keeper. The Knights then added the final two goals with a
Tonny Aton (So./Nairobi, Kenya/Lukenya) unassisted score in the 80th minute, and a
Eli Venetis (Fy./New York, N.Y./Collegiate School) to
Walter Williamson (Jr./Portland, Ore./Lincoln) connection in the 85th minute.
Goalies
Aaron Forman (Jr./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) and
Elliot Hanson (Fy./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) combined for the shutout in net, Carleton's sixth in their first seven games.
