Knights down Scots in MIAC opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Abby Loe (Jr./Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) claimed a team-best 14 kills and hit .458 to go along with a match-best 22 digs as the Carleton College volleyball team opened MIAC play with a convincing four-set victory (25-20, 25-11, 24-26, 25-10) over Macalester College on Wednesday evening at West Gym.
 
In the conference opener for both squads, the Knights got off to a strong start in the first set, as Carleton hit .333 and recorded 14 kills. Carleton held a 16-10 lead midway through the set, before the Scots (2-9, 0-1 MIAC) pulled within a point at 18-17. The Knights stretched the lead out to 22-18 a few points later and went on to win the first set 25-20 to take an early lead in the match.
 
Carleton (2-8, 1-0 MIAC) carried the momentum into the second set, as the Knights jumped out to a big lead early and eventually prevailed 25-11. Teegan Carlson (Jr./Benton City, Wash./Kiona-Benton City) finished off set two with a pair of service aces, which were a part of season hgh-tying 13 Carleton aces on the evening.
 
Macalester rallied to take the third set 26-24, but the Knights took any remaining drama away in set four, earning a convincing 25-10 win and match victory.
 
Olivia Powell (Sr./Palos Verdes, Calif./Chadwick) tallied 12 kills and hit .409 for the match, while Jancyn Appel (Fy./Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill) and Grace Leuchtenberger (Jr./Newton, Mass./Newton South) added five kills each.
 
Inger Shelton (So./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) recorded 27 assists to go along with five aces, while Natalie Mun (So./Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) chipped in with a season-best nine assists. Carlson added 13 digs and also claimed five aces in the match, tied for second-highest by a Knight over the last five seasons.
 
Eliza King led the Scots with 11 kills and a .222 hitting percentage.
 
UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton steps out of league play this weekend and travels to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to participate in the Mable Lee Tournament hosted by Coe College. Carleton opens play Friday evening against the Kohawks at 5 p.m.
