ST. PAUL, Minn. – On a soggy afternoon, the Carleton College women's soccer team again took advantage of a quick start, defeating Hamline University 2-1, thanks to goals from
Rainey Tilley (Fy./South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) and
Madeline Marker (Sr./Edina, Minn./Edina). This was the third consecutive conference match that saw the Knights score multiple goals within the opening 20 minutes.
The Knights (6-2-1, 3-1-0 MIAC) dominated statistically over the Pipers (4-6-0, 1-4-0 MIAC), outshooting the home team, 28-8, and attempting seven corner kicks compared to two for their MIAC foes. The result moved Carleton into a five-way tie atop conference standings.
"Today handed us brutal conditions," noted Carleton head coach
Jocelyn Keller. "Our goal was to play 90 minutes and put the game away early. We were able to score twice quickly, and we may have relaxed a bit. Unfortunately putting 22 of 28 hots on goal couldn't give us a more significant lead."
Rainey got the scoring started in the seventh minute when she scored her fourth goal of the season, tying her for the 2019 team lead.
Nora Mertz (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) was credited with the assist, her team-leading third of the season..
Almost immediately after Hamline's subsequent kickoff, the Knights struck again as Marker scored her third goal of the season off of a well-executed corner kick from
Cate Patterson (Fy./Racine, Wis./Prairie School).
Ashlee Olson tallied the lone goal for the hosts in the 27th minute, but Carleton went into halftime with a lead it would not relinquish.
The Knights were unable to find the back of the net in the second half but continued their dominance of the game, attempting 18 shots over the final 45 minutes compared to just three for the Pipers.
Anna Roethler (Jr./St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Lois Park) earned the win in between the pipes for Carleton, finishing with two saves.
