First-years lift Knights to Senior Day OT win over Macalester

NORTHFIELD, Minn. –The Carleton College women's soccer team dominated rival Macalester College statistically throughout the Senior Day match, but it was not until first-years Cate Patterson (Racine, Wis./Prairie School) and Rainey Tilley (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) combined on the deciding goal that the Knights were finally able to secure a 2-1 overtime victory.

Before the match, Carleton (7-2-1, 4-1-0 MIAC) honored seniors Julia Kenney (Evanston, lll./Evanston Township), Laura Kiernan (Madison, Wis./Madison West), Mackenzie Korpi (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook), Madeline Marker (Edina, Minn./Edina), Nora Mertz (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), Anika Thomas-Toth (Seattle, Wash./Garfield), and Emma Wasend (Denver, Colo./George Washington) for their accomplishments and influence on the program.

Despite the incredibly tight nature of the game, the Knights out-shot Macalester (1-8-1, 1-3-1 MIAC) by a whopping 28-3 margin and enjoyed a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Carleton came out of the gates on fire, forcing the Macalester keeper to make four saves in the opening 10 minutes. Tilley had a great chance in the fifth minute, but Kate Lawhead made a diving save to her right. Five minutes later, Marker nearly opened the scoring, but Lawhead punched that chance over the bar.

Moments later the Knights had another fantastic opportunity to get on the scoreboard first when Mertz was taken down in the box, drawing a penalty. She stepped up to take the penalty kick, but her shot towards the bottom right corner was read perfectly by Lawhead and swallowed up.

Overall the Knights owned a 15-0 edge in shots during the first half, but got on the scoreboard in the 28th minute thanks to an own-goal from the Scots. Kenney sent a dangerous cross into the box, and a Macalester defender was forced to try and head the ball away from the oncoming attackers, but instead arced it over her own goalie and into the net.

In the second half, Carleton again dominated possession but could not add to its lead.

Macalester's first shot of the match did not come until the 75th minute, but a wonderful strike from Kate Bond from the top of the box slipped under the crossbar to tie the match at 1-1. Neither team broke the deadlock in regulation.

As the first overtime session wound down, Patterson slid a pass between two Macalester defenders springing Tilley inside the box where she calmly slotted the game winner into the bottom right corner of the net for her team-best fifth goal of the season.

The result moved the Knights into a tie with Northfield neighbor St. Olaf College for first place in the conference standings with four weeks remaining in the regular season.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: The Knights will hit the road and look to continue their three-game win streak next Saturday, Oct. 12 when they take on the University of St. Thomas. It will be another weekend doubleheader with the men's game starting at 1:00 p.m. and the women's game slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
