Patterson powers home overtime PK to give Knights win at Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College women's soccer team went into overtime for the fourth consecutive game, this time coming out on top over Gustavus Adolphus College, 1-0, when Cate Patterson (Fy./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) smashed home a penalty kick in the 94th minute.

Despite the game heading into extra time, the Knights (8-2-3, 5-1-2 MIAC) had a dominant defensive performance, as they did not permit the Gusties (3-11-0, 2-6-0 MIAC) to take a single shot in the contest.

Once overtime began, Carleton settled in as this was the Knights' sixth time in 13 total games in which they had to play past regulation.

After a scramble following a Carleton corner kick, a Gustavus defender was called for a hand ball. Patterson powered home her fifth career goal and her first game-winner past the out-stretch arms of Gustavus goalie Ashley Becker to send the Knights into midterm break three points happier.

"Today's match taught us all a bit and reminded us that fundamentals will be critical as we look to our next three conference games," said Carleton head coach Jocelyn Keller. "It's always impressive to see a first-year take the game on their shoulders. Today, it was Cate, who executed a terrific PK against an All-American goalkeeper."

The victory continued Carleton's scorching hot streak to conference play, since dropping the MIAC opener back on Sept. 17, the Knights have not lost in their subsequent seven matches against conference foes.

Carleton now has 17 points and sits third in the conference standings with only three matches remaining in the regular season. The top six teams advance to the MIAC Playoffs.

"We have worked hard to put ourselves in a good place," said Keller, "but we must be even more intentional to finish strong and most importantly, finish playing for, and with, each other."

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: The Knights will take on first-place Augsburg University on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m. in Minneapolis.
