Knights drop tough 2-1 game at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Carleton College women's soccer team saw its six-game unbeaten streak snapped with 1 2-1 loss at conference-leading Augsburg University. Bella Bettner (So./DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) was the lone goal-scorer for the visitors.

The Knights (8-3-3, 5-2-2 MIAC) and the Auggies (11-3-1, 7-1-1 MIAC) battled back and forth all contest, with Carleton outshooting their hosts 6-5 in the first half, but Augsburg bounced back to outshoot the Knights 13-7 in the second half.

Despite Carleton having the better chances over the first half, the game appeared to be going into intermission scoreless. Some substitutions having come on to provide fresh legs, though, the Knights were able to finally break though in the 43rd minute. Emma Wasend (Sr./Denver, Colo./George Washington) battled an Augsburg fullback at the top of the box and and poked the ball over to fellow substitute Bettner, who promptly finished into the left side of the net to give Carleton a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Augsburg came out as the aggressor in the second period not wanting to drop any points in a tight MIAC playoff race. Megan Howard equalized the score in the 51st minute, and Gabriela Encarnacion scored the winner in the 67th.

The Knights came tantalizingly close to tying the game back up in the 72nd minute with a long range effort from Cate Patterson (Fy./Racine, Wis./Prairie School), one of her six shots of the evening. Unfortunately, her long drifting shot from well outside of the box was stopped when Emily Chapman managed to scramble back to her line and make a leaping save to keep the floater out of the top right corner.

Anna Roethler (Jr./St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Lois Park) made a handful of tough saves in the second half to keep the score close, finishing with seven stops overall.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton remains fourth in a tight race for the six-team MIAC Playoffs and heads back home to take on crosstown rivals St. Olaf College at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30. Live video and stats for the match will be available via links at athletics.carleton.edu.
