ST. PETER Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team could not overcome a fast start from Gustavus Adolphus College, falling 3-1 on the road.
Marco da Cunha (So./San Francisco, Ca-lif./San Francisco University) scored the lone goal for the Knights.
The Knights (10-3-1, 3-2-1 MIAC) battled back after falling in a quick three goal hole, outshooting the Gusties (12-2-0, 6-1-0 MIAC) 7-2 in the second half and 13-12 for the game, but were unable to capitalize on their chances.
Cole Schwartz scored the opening goal for Gustavus in the sixth minute, and then tacked on two more scores in the 15th and 31st minute to give himself a first-half hat-trick.
Carleton kept battling, and da Cunha pulled one back with an unassisted goal 30 seconds be-fore the halftime whistle blew. He collected a re-directed ball on the left wing, worked around a defender and took a shot from just inside the left edge of the box and buried it in the top right corner.
In the second half neither team was able to score any further goals, as the high-scoring nature of the first half was replaced with a physical final 45 minutes that saw the two teams combine for seventeen fouls and two yellow cards.
UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton will make up a previously scheduled game against Hamline University on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 5:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
