LAIE, Hawaii – Freddie Gillespie (So./Saint Paul, Minn./East Ridge) came off the bench to tally 17 points and 11 rebounds—both career highs—and Mitchell Biewen (Sr./Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) contributed a 21-point effort, but the Carleton College men’s basketball team absorbed a 79-70 setback to Hawaii Pacific University, a NCAA Division II program.

After shooting only 38 percent in the first half, and Carleton (1-1) trailed 35-28 at intermission. The Knights’ offense got on track and converted 63 percent of their field-goal attempts over the final 20 minutes. Carleton erased a 12-point deficit in the second half and built a 68-65 lead with three minutes remaining, but the Seasiders (5-0) closed the contest on a 14-2 run.

Gillespie’s night included 7-of-10 shooting from the field, as well as two blocks and a steal. His previous career highs were the six points and five rebounds he recorded in the Knights’ 2016-17 season opener last week.

Biewen drained five three-pointers, one shy of his career best and notched his fifth career game with at least 20 points. He also added five assists, tied for the team high.

Kevin Grow (So./Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) was the third Knight in double figures, finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.

Hawaii Pacific had four players finish in double figures, including a 21-point, eight-assist effort from Jordan Martin.

Carleton returns to the court at the Cannon Activities Center to face BYU-Hawaii at 5 p.m. HST/9 p.m. CST on Saturday, Nov. 26.
