Knights Unable to Overcome Concordia's Strong Rushing Attack

MOORHEAD, Minn.-- The Carleton College football team made its longest road trip of the season, traveling northwest to Moorhead, Minn., to take on the Concordia College. The visiting Knights were put on their heels early and never recovered, as they were handed 40-3 loss at the hands of the Cobbers.

Concordia (6-2, 5-1 MIAC)—who is receiving votes in both national polls—demonstrated why it entered the day with the 13th-best rushing attack in the nation as the Cobbers rumbled for 300 yards on the ground.

Carleton (1-8, 1-6 MIAC) forced fumbles on two of the Cobbers’ first four possessions, but the Knights were unable to capitalize either time. Concordia scored three times in the second quarter. Dane Ringquist and Herzog each had a rushing touchdown in the quarter, and the Cobber defense was able to force a safety en route to a 26-0 lead at halftime.

The Knights, who are usually a better second half team, were unable to swing the momentum in their favor following halftime. The Cobbers added two more touchdowns in early the third quarter.

Carleton placekicker Brandt Davis (Sr./La Verne, Calif./Bonita) got the Knights on the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter with a 33-yard field goal, with his MIAC leading ninth field goal made of the season.

Ethan Trujillo (Sr./Brighton, Colo./Brighton) led the way for the Knights on offense, coming off the bench to complete 60.8 percent of his passes and throwing for 158 yards. Dylan Saline (Sr./Anoka, Minn./Champlin Park) and Mark Leedy (So./Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) led the way defensively for the Knights, each totaling a game-high 10 tackles. Saline also intercepted a pass–third interception of the season—and recovered a fumble in the game.

The Knights have the bye next weekend before closing the season on Saturday, Nov. 12 when they take on Gustavus Adolphus College. Kickoff for is slated for 1:00 p.m. from Laird Stadium, and Knights Online will once feature live video coverage.
