Wade Thompson

Northfield, Minn. – Wade Thompson (Jr./Peterson, Minn./Rushford-Peterson) rushed for 67 yards and one touchdown but the host Carleton College football team couldn't overcome a 14-point halftime deficit in falling to the University of St. Thomas, 21-7.

The Toms (2-4, 2-3 MIAC) rolled up 480 yards of total offense, 298 of that coming in the first half. The Toms scored once in the first and second quarter each, as Jimmy Mullen had a short touchdown run midway through the first quarter after Carleton’s lone turnover of the day, while Jake Casey scampered in from 14 yards out early in the second.

The Knights had two excellent scoring chances in the first half. After holding the Toms to a three-and-out on the game's first possession, R.J. Jackson (So./Roseville, Minn./De La Salle) returned the ensuing punt 46 yards into UST territory. Carleton drove to the Toms' 29-yard line but fumbled the ball away, squelching the drive. The Knights had another good chance late in the half, going 70 yards to the UST 9-yard line. Facing a fourth-and-two, the Knights took a timeout but were unable to get the fourth-down play off in time, as they took a delay of game penalty. From the UST 14, Darren Caspers' (Jr./Bemidji, Minn.) pass to Mike Kootsikas (Jr./Rosemount, Minn.) in the corner of the end zone was ruled out of bounds.

Carleton (3-4, 1-4 MIAC) finally scored, cutting the gap to 14-7 on the first possession of the second half as Thompson barreled in from seven yards out, capping an 11-play, 63-yard drive. The Knights had the ball deep in UST territory on its next drive with a chance to tie the game, but the Toms Mike Rouse and Joe Grundtner blew up a fourth-and-two option play, giving the Toms the ball back.

Carleton got the ball right back on a John Hanks (Fy./LeRoy, Minn./LeRoy-Ostrander) interception, but the Toms forced a punt and promptly drove 92 yards in 11 plays, culminating in a 22-yard pitch and catch between quarterback David Sauer and receiver Ian Lewis, putting the visitors up by two scores with 9:20 left.

Thompson paced Carleton with 67 yards rushing while quarterback Darren Caspers added 42 yards rushing and 94 yards passing. Sauer was 11-for-18 for 107 yards and one touchdown in relief of starter Justin Lockrem, who was 12-for-22 for 154 yards with one interception in the first half. P.J Theisen had seven catches for 131 yards and added 55 yards rushing and 41 in returns, giving him 227 all-purpose yards on the day. Mullen added 79 yards on the ground for the Toms.

Andrew Ubbelohde paced UST defensively with 16 tackles, six solo, and three for losses. Grundtner added 11 total tackles, seven solo. Randy Foss (Jr./Hastings, Minn.) and Jerad Phelps (So./Northfield, Minn.) led the Knights with nine stops each, while Foss added his first career interception. Nick Brokke (Sr./Roseville, Minn.) added seven stops, all solo, with four pass break-ups, and Drew Ziller (Fy./Byron, Minn./Rochester Lourdes) tacked on a career-best eight tackles.

Carleton returns to action next week, traveling to Bethel University while St. Thomas hosts Gustavus Adolphus College. Game time for both contests is 1 p.m.
