Marie Marsman (Mountain View, Calif.) set two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) overall records and swam the fastest times of the season in the 50 and 100 freestyle at the University of Minnesota Invitational this weekend.
Marsman swam a 23.71 in the 50 freestyle, reaching the NCAA "A" standard, breaking her own team record in the process. The mark came in the preliminary heat and was the third-fastest time. [She was unable to participate in the evening finals, as Carleton is in final examinations.] On Sunday, she recorded a time of 51.39 in the 100 freestyle, again breaking her own team record and surpassing the NCAA "A" standard. She placed second in the event to Carrie Nixton of Notre Dame. Both times were also new MIAC overall records.
Angie Soucek (Colorado Springs, Colo./ Cheyenne Mountain) placed 12th in the three-meter event, taking 12th in 401.70. She also participated in the one-meter event, scoring 170.00 points.
Maroya Spalding (Raymond, Neb./ Lincoln) swam to a 5:24.27 in the 500 freestyle. The Knights also entered three relays: the 200 freestyle relay, the 800 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay.
On the men's side, Kellen Edelbrock (Penna Furnace, Pa./ State College Area) competed in two events, tallying a time of 5:03.85 in the 500 freestyle and 2:08.39 in the 200 IM. Michael Thorsen (Des Moines, Iowa/ Hoover) tallied a 22.90 in the 50 freestyle.
On Saturday, Jason Brown (Jr./Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) recorded a 1:53.23 in the 200 freestyle. Andy Evans (Fy./Maple Grove, Minn.) tallied an impressive finish in the 100 breastroke, going 1:04.31 to finish among the top five freshmen in the event, with the four rookies in front of him being Division I swimmers.
