NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Junior Kent Hanson (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) poured in a game-high 27 points surpass 1,000 career points, but even that was not enough to prevent the Carleton College men’s basketball team from dropping a 59-56 result at cross-town rival St. Olaf College on Wednesday evening. The result also gave the Oles possession of the famed Goat Trophy.
Hanson becomes the 29th player in Carleton men’s basketball history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau. This was his 16th career game with 20-plus points.
Buckets were difficult to come by in the early going, as the Knights (5-10, 3-7 MIAC) first got on the board at the 15:22 mark courtesy of a slashing layup by Carlston McKenzie (Fy./Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park). Austin Korba had singlehandedly given his Oles (8-7, 7-3 MIAC) a 6-0 edge before that.
After a timeout to talk things over, Carleton responded with a 9-0 run to go up by three at 9-6 with 12:38 left in the period.
Matthew Stritzel (So./Chicago, Ill./Niles Notre Dame) lifted the Knights with his shooting from long range, nailing a trio of 3-pointers in the half. His third tied the game at 19-19 with five minutes remaining before intermission.
The Oles rode a mini-run toward the end of the period to a 26-21 lead before the Knights got some hard-earned points in the paint to trim the deficit. At the half, St. Olaf led by a 30-27 tally. Stritzel and Hanson accounted for 21 of Carleton’s 27 points in the period.
Early on in the second, Stritzel picked up right where he left off, draining a 3-pointer to give the Knights a 32-31 edge. Another Stritzel trey 90 seconds later upped Carleton’s lead to 37-31 with 16:18 left, and the Oles promptly called a timeout.
St. Olaf, fueled by a raucous home crowd, battled back and tied the game at 40-40. The two teams cooled off afterward, but an old-fashioned three-point play by Hanson handed the Knights a 52-49 advantage with 3:53 left in the game.
On the other end, Korba converted on an elbow jumper to bring St. Olaf within one. A few possessions later, Korba corralled an offensive rebound, dribbled out to the perimeter, and hit a crucial three to give his team a 54-52 lead with just 2:07 left. He finished with 15 points to pace the hosts.
A Carleton turnover and another made shot by St. Olaf left Carleton facing a 56-52 deficit with just over a minute left in the game. After the Oles failed to put the game away at the free throw line, the Knights had a shot to tie the game trailing 59-56 with 3.1 seconds remaining. Hanson got a heavily contested look from the corner, but the shot missed, and St. Olaf escaped with a 59-56 victory to reclaim the Goat Trophy.
Hanson paced the Knights on offense with 27 points while adding 10 rebounds to notch yet another double-double. Stritzel matched his career-high with five 3-pointers and finished the contest with 18 points. Quinn Johnson (Sr./Roseville, Minn.) racked up a game-best six assists for Carleton.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 for a home matchup against No. 8-ranked Saint John’s University at 3:00 p.m. That game will follow the 1 p.m. women’s contest against College of Saint Benedict. Links to live video and stats for both games will be available on Knights Online.
