St. Peter, Minn. -- John Hollowed (So./Mercer Island, Wash.) threw for a career high 208 yards and scored a rushing touchdown, but the Carleton College football team scored only once on five red-zone scoring opportunities and committed four turnovers in falling at Gustavus Adolphus College, 31-12.
Carleton set school records for pass completions (34) and attempts (61), rolled up 455 yards of total offense and converted 10-of-20 third downs, couldn't find the end zone save for Hollowed's 13-yard scoring run late in the third quarter.
The Knights (3-6, 1-6 MIAC) outgained the Gusties 455-416, tallied 25 first downs to the Gusties' 17 and held more than a two-minute time of possession advantage. However, Gustavus (2-7, 2-5 MIAC) blocked a Carleton punt, recovered on onside kick after a safety and turned the ball over once in scoring on five of six possessions midway through the contest. The Gusties scored on their first four red-zone chances and tallied three pass plays of 30 or more yards and five of more than 20 yards.
Mike Kootsikas (Jr./Rosemount, Minn.) recorded nine catches for 128 yards in his best game of the year as eight different Knights had receptions. Chris Gardner (Fy./Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East) added five catches for 62 yards for Carleton.
Jordan Stolp was 17-of-29 for 253 yards and three scores for the Gusties, who also got 78 yards rushing from Drew Stifter. Clint Riegelman added four catches for 113 yards.
Things looked rosy for the Knights early. They forced a three-and-out by the Gusties, took over at their own 39-yard line and marched down to the Gustie 18-yard line. After a pass completion inside the 10-yard line, though, the Knights fumbled the ball away and the Gusties recovered. Carleton's defense forced another punt and the offense drove to the Gustie 29-yard line but failed on a fourth down play.
Gustavus would take charge of the game from that point. On their first play from scrimmage on that third possession, Stolp found Chad Arlt behind the Knight secondary for a 44-yard gain, setting up an 8-yard ross to tight end Jamie Germscheid.
The Gusties forced a Carleton punt on the next possession and blocked it. Carleton's defense came up with a rare stop when Drew Ziller (Fy./Byron, Minn./Rochester Lourdes) intercepted Stolp for Carleton's only takeaway on the day, returning it 22 yard to the Knights' 32-yard line. Carleton had to punt it back to the Gusties , who then scored early in the second quarter when Stolp hit John Retka from 22 yards out for a 14-0 lead.
Carleton got on the board on their next drive, moving 51 yards in 12 plays and getting a Matt Bond (Sr./Stillwater, Minn.) 41-yard field goal, his career long and tied for the seventh-longest in school history. Gustavus answered with a Stolp 20-yard field goal, but left the Knights three minutes to move 70 yards. On the second play of the drive starting quarterback Darren Caspers (Jr./Bemidji, Minn.) was knocked out of the game, but Hollowed entered and drove the Knights down to the Gustie 4-yard line, but three passes into the end zone in the final minute were incomplete. Bond trotted on for a 21-yard field goal, but a low snap threw off his timing and the kick was blocked. Hollowed was 6-for-10 on the drive for 68 yards.
Carleton's first turnover of the game led to the Gusties' third score. After an interception gave the Gusties the ball at their own 37, they drove 63 yards in seven plays, highlighted by a 41-yard pass play from Stolp to Riegelman, with Stifter busting in from 2 yards out for the score. The Knights answered right back, going 66 yards on nine plays as Hollowed scrambled in from 13 yards. The sophomore southpaw was 5-for-6 for 46 yards on the drive.
Gustavus answered again, as Stolp hit Riegelman for 21 yards on a third-and-14 play from the Carleton 31-yard line, and the the Gustie quarterback hit Arlt from 10 yards out to put the Gusties in front, 31-10, at the end of the third quarter.
Carleton, likely needed to score on every possession it had left, marched down the field behind Hollowed's left arm again, but on second down from the Gustie 20, Hollowed was picked off by Wade Vrieze at the 1-yard line. Stolp would bobble the snap from center on the next play and Pat Frett (Jr./Wilmette, Ill./Ann Arbor Huron) was right there to tackle Stolp for the safety.
The next play typified Carleton's afternoon. Stolp, kicking off from his own 20-yard line, intentionally hit a short ball, which hooked toward the sideline, took a huge hop and was recovered by the Gusties. Although Gustavus was unable to score again, any momentum the Knights had was gone.
Carleton had one more chance at scoring, as Taylor Schieck (Fy./Austin, Minn.) maneuvered the Knights 70 yards in 14 plays on the game's final drive, going 5-for-10 for 80 yards, but with four shots from inside the 10-yard line the Knights came up empty.
Jerad Phelps (So./Northfield, Minn.) led the Knights' defense with nine stops while Luke Muellerleile (Sr./White Bear Lake, Minn./Mahtomedi) and Ziller made eight tackles each.
Carleton ends the season by hosting Hamline University on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. at Laird Stadium. It will be Senior Day for the Knights.
