Knights' offense silent in loss to Grinnell

Northfield, Minn. -- Carleton College, in a rare Monday afternoon game, managed only three shots on goal and lost a non-conference affair with Grinnell College (Iowa), 2-0.

The Knights (3-8-2) saw their unbeaten streak end at three matches as the Pioneers tallied a pair of second-half goals for the victory.

Emily Muirhead (So./Minneapolis/Southwest) made two saves in net in taking the loss. It was her first start in net in six matches, as Carleton head coach Karen Parker rested new starter Yusi He (Fy./South Pasedena, Calif.), who has posted four shutouts in her first six collegiate starts.

Muirhead was solid in net as both of Grinnell's goals were hard earned. In the 59th minute a ball was played across the Carleton goal but went untouched. The Pioneers (9-3-1) gathered possession on the far side and Gabi Maldonado-Bell played it back to Emily Scholten, who blasted a shot from 30 yards. The ball had more pace than it appeared coming off Scholten's foot and hit the left post over Muirhead's outstretched hands, nicked the right post and went into the net.

Carleton tried to get the equalizer, pushing forward and eventually paying the price when Kate Diedrick snuck behind the Knights' defense and beat Muirhead in a one-on-one situation with a nice shot into the upper right corner.

Carleton returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19, closing out its non-conference slate by hosting the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. The match, originally scheduled for early September but postponed by heavy rain showers, kicks off at 4 p.m. The game can be heard live on Knights Online (http://www.carleton.edu/athletics/broadcasts).
