NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Five members of the Carleton College women's soccer program took home All-Region IX recognition from the United Soccer Coaches on Tuesday. Goalkeeper
Avery Trapp and defender
Zaraya Jordan were first-team honorees, defender
Sam Gotch and forward
Kathryn Kresse were second-team selections, and midfielder
Ashlyn Haigh was a third-team pick. Carleton's five-member All-Region class is tied for the largest in NCAA Division III this season.
The Knights went 18-3-3 this season, tying the program record for victories as Carleton qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive year. Carleton started its national tournament run with a 1-0 win over John Carroll University followed by a 2-0 victory over previously undefeated/untied Lake Forest College. Carleton then tied No. 13 Swarthmore 1-1- (2OT) before advancing with a 4-2 win in the shootout. The Knights advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2008 but lost 2-1 at No. 7-ranked University of Chicago.
Trapp, who was a third-team All-Region pick last fall, is the second Carleton goalkeeper to earn All-Region honors and the first to do so multiple times (see full list of All-Region honorees below). Trapp finished as the Division III leader in goalie minutes played this season with 2113:19, and her 12 shutouts paced the region. She finished second in the region and 25th in the country with a 0.511 goals against average. Trapp's .859 save percentage was third in the region. During the Sweet Sixteen shootout versus Swarthmore, she stopped two penalty kicks and scored the clinching goal in the Knights' 4-2 victory.
Jordan is the second defender in program history to collect back-to-back All-Region nods after she was a third-team selection a year ago. She started all 24 games at centerback and paced the Knights in minutes played at 2,149. She was a critical part of a backline that helped Carleton post a team-record 16 shutouts this season, including four during the postseason. The Knights yielded a 0.493 goals against average, second-best in the region this fall. Jordan's first career goal accounted for all the scoring in the MIAC Playoff Championships victory that punched Carleton's ticket to the NCAA tournament.
Gotch started Carleton's first 20 games at left outside back before sustaining a season-ending knee injury in the MIAC Playoffs championship match. Her play helped limit this year's top-50 goal scorers in the MIAC to only 3 total goals in 13 games against Carleton. Gotch joined in the offensive attack and contributed 4 goals and 3 assists. She tallied game-winning goals versus Carthage, Wisconsin-Platteville, and St. Scholastica.
Kresse joins Niki Tomita (2009-11) as the only players in program history to earn All-Region recognition for three consecutive seasons. Kresse secured All-Region Second Team distinction for the third straight year. This fall, she started all 24 games and accounted for 8 goals and 5 helpers, giving her 33 career scores and 20 career assists. She notched game-winning goals this season against Hope, Hamline, Augsburg, and Lake Forest. She ranks second in recorded team history for career goals, career assists, and career points (86).
Haigh earned her first career All-Region honor as the defensive midfielder finished the season with 7 goals—tied for third on the roster—and three assists in 24 starts. She set up the game-winning goals twice during the postseason, assisting on the overtime winner vs. St. Olaf in the MIAC Playoffs semifinals and the first goal of a 2-0 victory over previously undefeated/untied Lake Forest College in the second round of the NCAA Championships. Haigh notched the game-tying goal in Carleton's Sweet Sixteen matchup against No. 13-ranked Swarthmore College, allowing the Knights to eventually prevail in a shootout following the 1-1 (2OT) draw. She played a key role in disrupting the opponents' offenses throughout the year as the Knights surrendered only 12 goals in 24 games this season.
