St. Paul, Minn. -- R.J. Jackson tallied TD runs for 28 and 74 yards and returned a punt 41 yards for a score as Carleton won for the third time this season, disposing of host Macalester, 31-7.
The win allowed the Knights (3-3) to retain the Book of Knowledge for the third consecutive year. The Book of Knowledge is a traveling trophy exchanged between the two highest-ranked academic institutions in Minnesota. The trophy, started in the 1999 season, has belonged to the Knights for the past three seasons.
Jackson rushed nine times for 112 yards, keying a Carleton ground attack which rushed for 199 yards. The Knights won despite tallying only 12 first downs and losing the time of possession battle 41:13-18:47 and going 2-for-9 on third-down conversions.
Pat Frett, James Clark, Adam Witt and Adam Rossow had eight tackles each for the Knights' defense. Frett forced a fumble and added a career-best three sacks. Rossow added a sack of his own as the Knights tallied nine sacks on the day, holding the Scots to -2 rushing yards. Clark also had a sack and forced and recovered a fumble.
The Scots (0-7) opened the game with an onside kick and recovered it. They drove 45 yards in 12 plays, scoring on a 5-yard TD pass. They forced Carleton to punt on their next possession, but the Scots went in reverse and were forced to punt from their own end zone. Jackson fielded the punt at the Scots 41-yard line and burst upfield for his first punt return for a touchdown of his career and his fourth special teams touchdown in 16 career games.
The Carleton defense forced a turnover on Macalester's next possession, as Frett's sack jarred the ball loose and Clark was there for the recovery at the Scot 39-yard line. Three plays later Jackson busted loose for a 28-yard score to give Carleton a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter gave the Knights three great scoring chances, but they were only able to capitalize on one. Carleton took over in Macalester territory to start the period, but a fumble quickly ended that threat. A Nick Brokke (Sr./Richfield, Minn.) interception set the Knights up at the Scot 29-yard line, but Macalester intercepted the Knights deep in Scots' territory. The Scots embarked on a 15-play drive and pushed the ball down to the Carleton 2-yard line, but Randy Foss (Jr./Hastings, Minn.) and Clark stuffed a second-down rush attempt and Jerad Phelps (So./Northfield, Minn.) broke up a fourth-down pass play.
The Knights drove the length of the field in 1:36, aided by a pair of Macalester personal foul penalties and four Darren Caspers (Jr./Bemidji, Minn.) pass completions. With the ball inside the Macalester 10-yard line and less than 20 seconds left, the Knights couldn't push it across and Matt Bond (Sr./Falls Church, Va.) booted a 19-yard field goal on the half's final play.
On the third play of the second half, Brokke notched his second interception of the day, returning it 21 yards to the Macalester 39-yard line. Seven playus later Wade Thompson (Jr./Peterson, Minn./Rushford-Peterson) bust through from four yards away and the Knights led, 24-7. Carleton scored for the final time late in the third quarter as Jackson ripped off a 74-yard run, his career long, to cap the scoring.
The Knights outgained the Scots 266-136, but three Carleton turnovers prevented the Knights from shaking the Scots until that third quarter. Thompson added 56 yards on 14 carries for the Knights while Mike Kootsikas (Jr./Rosemount, Minn.) added three grabs for 28 yards, pushing his career reception total to 73 and pushing him into Carleton's all-time top 10 in only his 16th career game. Caspers was 7-for-15 for 59 yards and rushed for 12 yards, giving him exactly 3,000 yards of total offense for his career. He is only the eighth Carleton player to reach that milestone.
Brokke's two picks left him with 12 for his career, ranking him fifth on Carleton's all-time list. Seven different players recorded sacks for the Knights, paced by Frett's three takedowns and one each by Clark, Rossow, Eric Paul, Mike Morrissey, John Hanks and Tim Blaha.
The Knights return to action next Saturday, Oct. 22, hosting the University of St. Thomas in the second-to-last home game of the season. The game, which kicks off at 1 p.m., can be heard live on Knights Online at http://www.carleton.edu/athletics/broadcasts or locally on Power 96/95.9 FM.
