Saint John's Quick Start Dooms Knights

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- The Carleton College football team was back on the road this week as the Knights took on national No. 10 Saint John’s University. The Johnnies scored touchdowns on their first four offensive possessions and never looked back as they defeated the Knights, 62-0.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Johnnies (6-1, 4-1 MIAC) used a nine-play, 71-yard drive to get on the scoreboard when quarterback Ben Alvord ran it in from seven yards out. That was the first of four 70-plus-yard scoring drives for Saint John’s on the day. After a three and out for Carleton (1-6, 1-4 MIAC), the Johnnies scored on their next possession when Will Gillach hauled in a 39 yard touchdown pass from Alvord. The Johnnies would go on to score one more time in the opening quarter.

The Knights were unable to overcome this early 21-0 deficit as the Carleton offense struggled to gain momentum, totaling six three-and-outs before a 10-play drive to end the first half.

On the day, the Knights were led offensively by Zach Creighton (Sr./Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) who grabbed nine catches for 72 yards. Christian Zaytoun (So./Raleigh, N.C./Woodberry Forest) also played well off the Knights’ bench as he threw for 127 yards on 11-of-23 passing in the first extended action of his collegiate career.

Defensively, Dylan Saline (Sr./Anoka, Minn./Champlin Park) and Spencer Francis (So./Hartland, Wis./Brookfield Academy) led the way for the Knights as they each recorded a game-high 11 tackles.

Carleton returns to Laird Stadium next week to take on cross-town rival St. Olaf College. Kickoff in the battle for the Goat Trophy is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Live video/stats will be available via Knights Online.
