Knights dominate but fall to Storm

Martha Polk head shot

Northfield, Minn. -- Martha Polk (So./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) scored her first goal of the season and the Carleton College women's soccer team outshot visiting Simpson College (Iowa), 19-6, but the Storm scored in the 62nd minute to edge the Knights, 2-1.

The first half was fairly evenly played until Natalie Chizek's high shot was tipped by Carleton keeper Emily Muirhead (So./Minneapolis/Southwest), but the shot hit the ball and trickled across the line in the 38th minute.

Carleton answered five minutes into the second half when Polk pounced on a ball played into the box by Elizabeth Merrill (So./Minneapolis/Southwest) and knocked it home.

The visitors tallied the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute when Alyssa Stoll headed home a corner kick from Morgan Kelly. The Knights would have a number of excellent opportunities at the equalizer, including a trio of shots with the Simpson keeper off her line, but the Knights simply couldn't break the seal in suffering their fourth loss in five games.

Simpson keeper Whitney Franker, arguably the player of the game, notched nine saves in net for the Storm. Muirhead posted a trio of saves over the first 45 minutes for the Knights while Jenna Bernhardson (So./Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) didn't make a save in suffering the loss in net.

Carleton returns to MIAC play by hosting Augsburg College on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. at Bell Field.
