MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team notched its first conference victory of the season, picking up a 3-0 triumph at Concordia College-Moorhead.
The Knights (5-2-0, 1-1-0 MIAC) jumped out to an early lead as
Oscar Gates notched an eighth-minute goal. A long throw in by
Hans Lechner was flicked on by
Felix Shapiro. The ball bounced around the top of the box before Gates ran onto it and rocketed a shot in to the bottom left corner to tally his fourth score of the season.
Carleton doubled its lead in the 56th minute.
Hudson Benites ignited the attack with a pass that sprung Lechner up the sideline. The rookie served a perfect cross to the middle of the box, allowing
Matthew Deffo to race in and smash a header into the net for his team-best fifth goal of the campaign.
Three minutes later the Knights found the scoresheet again. This time,
Willan Schrock, making his season debut, stole the ball and raced into the box where he was yanked down from behind, earning Carleton a penalty kick and the Concordia (2-3-3, 0-1-2 MIAC) defender a red card.
Asher Burt stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted the ball home for his first goal of the year.
Carleton finished the day with a 21-6 advantage in shot attempts, an 11-3 margin in shots on goal, and an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
Carleton's starting goalkeeper
Ethan Saucedo was removed from the game less than a minute into the contest after a Cobber attacker collided with him, earning the first of Concordia's five bookings on the day.
Adam Ouachani came on in relief and registered three saves to preserve the shutout.
The biggest of those stops came in the 37th minute, denying the Cobbers' Noah Meyer on the doorstep after a Knight defender slipped on the wet grass.
