DULUTH, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team appeared to have played host College of St. Scholastica to a draw, but a last-second penalty kick was awarded, which the Saints converted to hand the Knights a 2-1 defeat.
Carleton (3-1-0, 0-1-0 MIAC) knocked the ball out of bounds for a corner kick with 12 seconds remaining. St. Scholastica's (2-3-0, 1-0-0 MIAC) desperation corner was only partially cleared by the Knights. Right before time expired, a Saint tried to take a final shot but tripped over a Carleton player, who appeared to have already re-directed the ball away from the net.
The center official, who had an unobstructed view of the play, blew the whistle to end the game, and the two team's head coaches exchanged the traditional post-game handshake.
Then the officiating crew gathered at the end line for a lengthy discussion after which, the whistle was blown once more, this time putting one second back on the clock and giving penalty kick to St. Scholastica. Parker Chastey converted from the spot to give the Saints a 2-1 victory in the conference opener for both squads.
Oscar Gates accounted for the Knights goal, scoring his third goal of the season in the 29th minute, unleashing a 22-yard rocket into the top right corner of the goal.
St. Scholastica found the equalizer in the 50th minute as Chastey found Vasco Carneiro open on the right wing for a shot into the far side of the net.
Carleton out-shot St. Scholastica 18-7 on the day and held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.
