INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Carleton College men's soccer team returned to the win column with a 4-0 victory over Simpson College on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights (4-1-0) finished the afternoon with an 18-5 advantage in shot attempts.
Twice Carleton was denied a great scoring chance only to cash in a scoring opportunity soon after.
In the 21st minute,
Oscar Gates ripped a shot that was tipped just outside the right post by the Simpson (1-2-2) goalkeeper.
Ben Roman sent the ensuing corner kick to the back post, where the ball was headed back across the goal mouth by
Matthew Deffo. Before a Knight could touch it, the ball deflected off a Simpson defender and into the net.
The Knights doubled their lead in the 32nd minute.
Asher Burt sent a free kick from the right wing into the box. Senior
Josh Zebrack beat his defender to the spot and one-timed the ball into the net for his first career goal.
Carleton tacked on two more goals midway through the second half.
Deffo was incorrectly whistled for being offsides on a breakaway in the 64th minute, but the Knights did not let that bother them as
Hays Turner scored only a minute later. The senior collected a long ball and dribbled into the box and slid a shot inside the far post to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Deffo got on the scoreboard three minutes later.
Ian Vishnick sparked the attack with a pass to a cutting
Alex Harcourt, who slotted a through ball to Deffo for a shot over the goalkeeper from the top of the box.
Adam Ouachani and
Will Townsend combined on a shutout for Carleton. The former played the first 77-plus minutes and recorded three saves, while the latter made his collegiate debut and worked the balance of the contest.
